Ted Nugent Invited to Obama's State of the Union

Guitar legend Ted Nugent has been invited to Obama's State of the Union address as the guest of freshman Rep. Steve Stockman (R-TX). The latter made headlines this year by promising to impeach the president for enacting new gun laws.

Nugent stands a good chance of being Obama's most hostile audience member. In 2012 he was investigated by the Secret Service for threatening the president when he said, "if Barack Obama becomes the president in November again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year."

In January 2013, Nugent suggested he was willing to start another revolutionary war, telling a gun show audience that "if you want another Concord Bridge, I've got some buddies." In the same speech he called Obama "an evil dangerous man who hates America."

Progressives on Twitter have been branding Nugent's invitation a PR "disaster" for the GOP, and calling on John Boehner to intervene and prevent the guitarist from attending.

    Actually if you do your homework, Ted Nugent is the hypocrite. Ted Nugent should have been supporting Pres. Obama. Mitt Romney enacted the toughest gun legislation in the country , as Governor of Massachusetts. This is a fact. Obama did nothing about guns and even now it is only talk . Nugent also threatened the POTUS. This leads me to believe that Ted "hasbeen" Nugent is just another rightwing racist using the gun stuff as an excuse to hate Obama. Redneck Nugent hates Obama because of his skin color.

    Speaking of hypocrites...Harkening back to a recent Politix topic, uh, please tell us again who/what group is working tirelessly to divide Americans? The seething, unbridled hatred being proudly displayed by extremist, right-wingers is truly something to behold.

    Maybe he'll make a move and the Secret Service will have to take him down. Personally I'd like to see how "tough" he is against them. Might go a long way in showing us just what the "Nuge" really has to back up all his bluster.

    "Nugent openly admitted that he avoided the draft during the Vietnam War. In an October 1977 interview with the magazine devoted to marijuana, High Times and in 1990 with the Detroit Free Press, he told how he avoided the draft. This is what he had to say in 1977:

    “So I got my notice to be in the draft. Do you think I was gonna lay down my guitar and go play army? Give me a break! I was busy doin’ it to it. I had a career, Jack! I ceased cleansing my body. No brushing teeth, no washing hair, no baths, no soap, no water. Thirty days of debris build. My hair was gettin’ kinky, matted up. I just had chips, Pepsi, beer, syrup.     His actions over the course of the 30 days prior to his draft physical, which also included ingestion of crystal meth, earned himself a deferment from military service. He also obtained a student deferment by enrolling in a community college but by his own accounts never attended."

    Let's just hope that the media gives Ted LOTS & LOTS of attention. The more Ted speaks up the more people will be repulsed by the GOP brand. People like Ted Nugent, Todd Akin, Richard Mourdock, Sarah Palin, Joe Wilson, Allen West and Michelle Bachmann are great for the Democrats.

    You know, I am against gun control, as are many Americans. But there is a way to go about this. The people that they keep putting up to debate the anti gun control side are some of the biggest nuts they could find. Its like they looked far and wide for the craziest people alive, lined them up, and said "you go first since you're the least crazy. You go second because...." etc. In what world are these people helping?

    Just as an aside,@Mary, Michigan native Nuge is not a "southern rocker", being the "Motor City Madman" and all, and there are plenty of real guitarists who cringe whenever Nugent's name and "guitar legend" are used in the same sentence.

    @thatgirl I have some really good "guitar legend" music on vinyl....including Hendrix, Nugent, Zeppelin, Clapton and others. Please don't make fun of me with the "vinyl" music :)

    As much as I like @POLITIXMARY, Ted Nugent is not now nor has he ever been a southern rocker. He was attempting to be a metal rocker at one time (DASRB is right, he called himself the Motor City Madman" and he's sorta fallen into that cliche of "hard rock" which is basically power chords and box riffs that any kid in the bedroom with guitar can play? But he's never been a southern rocker or a guitar legend.

    True true, "southern-influenced " might have been better, though perhaps you can be a "southern rocker" even if you're born elsewhere. "Guitar legend" is a matter of taste, of course ;)

    @Clarke12 - Probably so, but right now it is the GOP that has become "the party of stupid" associated with people making ridiculous and often stupid statements (i.e., Todd Akin). I would hope that GOP members were smart enough to realize that now is not a good time to associate with lunatics.

    I vote that yes he has that right, because he does have the right. But if he does choose to attend it won't be helpful to country in any way. Ted Nugent is one of my favorite performers, and is entitled to his views on guns, however the SOTU is much bigger than one view! I hope he declines.

    Ted is a rock star. He says outrageous thing because he likes pissing the left off. He isn't crazy he just hates the left and doesn't care what you think. He thinks the left is a joke. That's what's funny about him. The left hates not being taken seriously. There are dozens of left wing artist that do the same to the right.

    And with his psychiatric history, how did he pass a background check? Or did he? Easy enough for him to find a straw man to buy his guns for him.

    In related news the Secret Service will be billing for an additional 100 agents, accompanying hookers and party favors to ensure Nugent isn't going to act out. Nugent on the other hand is wearing his camo tie, and presenting the president with a guitar shaped like a Laws rocket.

    @jessejaymes I don't know. Maybe congress needs a committee to look into this. Why not, D.C. has committee's for all the other unimportant stuff...even though hookers would be a more important unimportant "stuff"

    Nugent can't sing, plays lead riffs "in a box", doesn't read music or play freestyle riffs. Hasn't had a hit in well over what? 25 years now and only had two in the past 40 years. The guy is a nobody. He only gets attention by raising cain against liberals. He's like the Streisand of the right. Only he can't sing. Nobody in their right mind cares what entertainers have to say about politics. I once auditioned to be a "monkee" and made the final 50 round out of more than 2,000 applicants. Do I get an invite to the state of the union? This guy AND the Gangham style guy need to get their 15 minutes over with and let people get onto more important things. Like whether Miley Cyrus is going to do Playboy or whatever. Know whut I mean Vern?

    @Denizen_Kate Well you have to admit whether Miley does Playboy (and I'm betting if she don't settle down at some point she probably will) is just as important as Ted Nugent.

    @Starsplash Miley is a wild child but man can she sing. Go to UTube and watch her version of "Jolene" and "Look what they've done to my song". I just hope she survives her wild side long enough to become the singer she will one day become if she doesn't flame.

    No thank you very much. I don't think he knows the words anyway.

    And by the way, I hope you appreciate my personal sacrifice. I had to listen to almost a dozen renditions of Ted and the national anthem trying to find one where he actually sang the words.

    So my secondary question becomes,"Why does anyone listen to that at all?"
    There are better garage bands.
