Reid's Filibuster Reform Didn't Stop His Filibuster 'Shame'

Republicans filibuster the Hagel nomination, and Dems blame Reid

Harry Reid was obliged to file for cloture to procede with the Chuck Hagel nomination after Republicans threatened a filibuster. Senators will now vote on Friday on whether or not to confirm Hagel, Obama's choice, as Secretary of Defense.

"This is the first time in the history that a presidential nominee for secretary of defense has been filibustered. What a shame," Reid said.

Reid is now deep in the doghouse with grassroots Democrats, who blame him for his "weak" filibuster reform earlier this month. "The real shame falls on Harry Reid and a few other Democratic Senators with either no brains, no courage, or no integrity," writes blogger BrooklynBadBoy at the Daily Kos.

I agree with you in principle, but the DoD needs a Secretary in light of the sequester axe about to fall. I think I want Sen Hagel in place to prevent those cuts from adversely effecting the troops on the ground. In this case, the faster the Senate moves the better for the troops.

@DARSB thou dost protest too much methinks. The vast majority of cuts that can be made by the govt are like, defense and bureaucratic. Cuts to things like social security and medicare, since they each have their own trusts, and to date have never contributed a dollar to the debt or deficit, I think are protected. If they are changed in any significant way, I would expect a wave of lawsuits probably costing considerably more than just paying the benefits.

It has everything to do with stopping anything Obama puts forth as this seems the only thing the GOP can agree works for them Did wonders for them last election didn't it? If the people they play this too can't see it for what it is then more is the shame for the rest of us for allowing it to continue because they are not the majority. When I watched my local elections I didn't see a single gop candidate run against his opponent. I saw everyone of them running against Obama. Not for anything, just against Obama. To watch the campaign ads you'd swear there were 150 guys running for president at least. This is more of the same from people who don't know anything else at this point. Divide and conquer? It is to wonder what the thought process is that goes on for this because it clearly isn't working for the party or the country.
