May 21 Thegrif v Yes Then test every 6 months, if kid passes test, move him up to next grade, if not test again in 6 months. This way kids that are more advanced can move on and kids that need it get more help. Then kids could start college at 15-16 and graduate by 19 or 20. And hopefully start working. Post
u May 16 oldsolder v Yes Originally spring break allowed for kids to help with spring planting of crops and summer break was to tend to the crops and bring in the harvest, it helped support the family. Todays kids don't know the meaning of work and frankly are just too lazy to do the work, they have been replaced by the nearly 12 million illegal Mexicans living in this country. American kids today are a bunch free loading sissies that take their education granted. Post

Some schools are in poor shape class rooms are to small, air systems are out dated , school book to old , and they don't have enough funding from the government ,lotto sales, or the parents. May 7 Canoochee v Yes No longer any reason not to have year round school. It sure would help out those single parents who have to scramble to get someone to watch their kids when school is not in session. Post

May 2 Goose v No Kids need to play also - not just study. I'm betting this idea is the brainchild of liberal educrats, who view government schools as Federal Indoctrination Centers. Post
u Apr 30 gherlone v No it's up to individual school systems to decide what works for them. I can see advantages in each way, but it is not for me to tell everyone else how to do things. I am not President Obama. Post

Apr 27 Concerned_Cit v No Waste of money. The school year should be shortened and less class time wasted on irrelevant subjects. Stick to math, science and ag science, social studies, english/writing and real phys ed, not some pansy PE play time. Art, music, and other subjects can be incorporated into those subjects. Post
u Apr 27 BossTweed v No No ..........Nine months of Social Engineering Indoctrination is too much already in the failing Urban Schools. Responsible parents need a couple of months to instill some values and fair minded standards in their own kids. Post
u Apr 27 fraps v Yes More days and longer hours. Later starting times for high school. Eliminate courses like basket weaving. Concentrate on courses like science, math, history, English, foreign languages. NO FLUFF. Post

Apr '13 DanielZ v No Much of education nowadays provides information without many opportunities for application. I would suggest the development of voluntary summer activities where students could apply what they have learned to turn information into knowledge. Post
u Mar '13 ashgreen v No We don't need more time in school, we need to revamp our ridiculously outdated education system. Teachers are teaching to the lowest denominator of students while at the same time pushing concepts that should not be taught until high school (I'm talking algebra in the 7th grade). Kids need more recess and more individualized attention. We need to hire more teachers who need to be better paid and better appreciated. That would allow schools to be more selective in who teaches our children. The best of the best for every level. Something has to give, and it's not going to be fixed by forcing uninterested kids to sit in school year-round. Post
Mar '13 GeorgiaSean7 v Yes Yes. First of all, it would raise student achievement by not allowing them to hang their brains up for three months. Also, it instills real-life skills, such as not having summer vacation when you're working in the real world. This would save the tax payers' money as students would complete their formal education in shorter time and could go on to university and keeps students out of trouble being that they have less free time on their hands. Yes it's a great idea! Post
Mar '13 Meesterdude v No No. 200 days seems good. You have to remember that many high schools students work full time during the summer not only for money for cool stuff and job experience but also to help out their family or pay for college. Taking away 3 months* of 8 hour work days would be devastating. *Some states or school districts have shorter summers because they take more breaks throughout the school year. Post
Feb '13 MarkJM v Yes We no longer live in the agricultural era. The majority of farms these days resort to outside labor for harvests. These kids do not need a 90 plus day summer vacation. Have 2-3 weeks in-between semesters. This would keep learning fresh in the minds of students (no more spending the first month trying to refresh students of last year's material). Secondly, this would provide families with more opportunity for that vacation. Instead of cramming it in the summer, then can now look at Spring, Fall, and Winter as well. Teachers would be in a better position to bargain for a higher salary as they would truly be full-time workers now. One last thing to consider, I try to leav... e35 endorsed Post
Feb '13 justapirate v No Comment 1. Let kids be kids. 2. 180 days a year gave us cars everywhere, appliances in every home and got us to the moon. 2b.Readin', 'ritin' and 'rithmetic did wonders for the world. We need to go back to teaching that. 3. Someone just wants a babysitter. r3 replies e23 endorsed Post
u Feb '13 BelinKS v No Children are only children for a short time. Let them be children for as long as possible, that means summer vacation, spring break, and the holidays out of school! Maybe make going to school in the summer optional for grades 9 through 12. Some may need it and some will use it to get ahead for college. I'm sure choosing to go to school during the summer when it is only optional will look good on paper when applying for colleges, e9 endorsed Post

Feb '13 Keyjo v No Let kids be kids. You only have one childhood and it is for only a short time. Children have to grow up too quickly as it is. e2 endorsed Post

u Feb '13 seedtick v Yes There is a way to do this and still have family vacations, etc. Schools in Hawaii are good examples of how it would work: http://doe.k12.hi.us/about/intro_calendar.htm I was impressed when my daughter and her family lived there for military service. Their three girls did great. e2 endorsed Post
Feb '13 AMSCountryboy v No Everything i needed to know (that i could learn in k-12 public school) i knew by the 10th grade. 11th and 12th seemed mostly pointless then and now. I was just going through the motions and waiting for a damn piece of paper. I couldnt imagine having MORE simple crap shoved at me every year. If school was made to be year round would kids start taking college classes in 10th grade? If so then why the hell would there be any need for college? And besides what happened to kids being kids? There is alot more to life than school and work. If you can not read, write, do math, or understand basic science and history after 180 days a year for 13 years (k-12) then there is a ser... e2 endorsed Post
