Both left and right have fallen gleefully on John McCain's latest heated exchange with Meet the Press's David Gregory.
"If the worst thing is true, what is that truth?" asked Gregory concerning Benghazi.
McCain said he didn't know, but "we have had a massive cover-up on the part of the administration - "
"A massive cover up of what?" Gregory interrupted.
McCain shot back "I'm asking you, do you care whether four Americans died?"
"Well, what you said was the cover-up - a cover-up of what?" Gregory insisted.
"Of the information concerning the deaths of four brave Americans," McCain replied. "The information has not been forthcoming."
In the same interview McCain claimed he is sticking to his guns on Chuck Hagel: He says he will not vote to confirm Hagel as Secretary of Defense. However, there's no knowing if McCain will really hold to this, since he's reversed course on Hagel several times in the past week alone.
SEN. GRAHAM: Are you surprised that the president of the United States never called you, Secretary Panetta, and say,‘how’s it going?’
SEC. PANETTA: I — you know, normally in these situations –
SEN. GRAHAM: Did he know the level of threat that –
SEC. PANETTA: Let — well, let me finish the answer. We were deploying the forces. He knew we were deploying the forces. He was being kept updated –
SEN. GRAHAM: Well, I hate to interrupt you, but I got limited time. We didn’t deploy any forces. Did you call him back — wait a minute –
SEC. PANETTA: No, but the event — the event was over by the time we got –
SEN. GRAHAM: Mr. Secretary, you didn’t know how long the attack would last. Did you ever call him and say, Mr. President, it looks like we don’t have anything to get there anytime soon?
SEC. PANETTA: The event was over before we could move any assets.
SEN. GRAHAM: It lasted almost eight hours. And my question to you is during that eight-hour period, did the president show any curiosity about how’s this going, what kind of assets do you have helping these people? Did he ever make that phone call?
SEC. PANETTA: Look, there is no question in my mind that the president of the United States was concerned about American lives and, frankly, all of us were concerned about American lives.
SEN. GRAHAM: With all due respect, I don’t believe that’s a credible statement if he never called and asked you, are we helping these people; what’s happening to them? We have a second round, and we’ll take it up then.
@armed_liberal Please...don't even start acting like you don't understand what I meant...I NEVER stated Obama and his lackies were behind the Newtown shootings...I NEVER stated Obama was behind Benghazi killings...I am pointing out the fact both sides of the aisle will use tragic and sad events to win political points...the only difference is...if Obama is found to have been able to do something and he failed to with Benghazi, his political career will look much like Carter's with Iran hostage situation...
I'm still waiting for anyone to tell me what exactly they have been 'covering up', and to what purpose. What should have happened is we should have waited for the conclusion of the investigation before going out and spouting what the causes may, or may not have been, as is the normal SOP for any ongoing investigation. That's what's most disconcerting to me, that the normal process was hijacked so some people can look like they are scoring political points.
Aviono air base in Italy was less than 1 hour fly time from Libya yet the fools administration claims forces could not respond.Get real.Once again believe your king obama and ask no questions like a good subject to his majesty.
mccain is just jealous because he's not part of the group that needs to have this information made available to them. if you have no use for whatever information and nobody gives it to you it isn't a coverup, it's telling you to mind your own damned business.
The government will not even give the names of those that survived to be interviewed. So much once again of Barrys open transparent government he had promised. From a line in the movie You cant handle the truth.
why should he tell you or me? not giving out unnecessary information, or information which would prove to be a liability to the nation isn't a cover up. do you really believe that this is the first time that any type of government official has been removed because they are a liability to national security? it's highly probable that those who survived were taken out of harm's way before the action started, or it was ordered that they weren't to be harmed.
@dances-weebles "not giving out unnecessary information, or information which would prove to be a liability to the nation isn't a cover up." HMMM.....who gets to decide what is "unnecessary information"? Just wondering.....
@miketost tell me something... if a person knew something which, if it became common knowledge, would compromise the safety or the integrity of the united states, what should be done with them? our government simply arranges for them to go away. haven't you been paying attention over the years?
Has it ever occured to anyone that the reason that ambassador brown was in that particular consulate on that particular night despite warnings and knowing that it lacked adequate security was that he was there to meet with a inside operative who was giving us intelligence on terrorist activities? Is it not in the realm of possibility that if there is a cover-up of some kind it's more a matter of an on-going national security issue and trying to protect an informant who's provided us with high level intel and has proven effective in other situations. Would it not suggest then that to disclose such information would be harmful to our other agents in the field? Perhaps they were found out and ambushed in retaliation but that doesn't mean that there aren't other assets that need protecting. Maybe the reason McCain isn't getting all the answers is simply it's on a need to know basis and he doesn't need to know. Just food for thought. I know how some of you whack-jobs love a good conspiracy. It might just be one of those random ambassadors acting for the cia kind of deals that really does happen. Exposing the operation could put years of hardwork in the shit can.I would believe that far more easily than I'd believe Obama wanted him killed right before his election so he denied him security. Because that sounds pretty stupid.
McCain further reduces his relevance in Washington every time he launches into one of his bitter, irrational outbursts. ...poor man. It may be time for him to ride off into the sunset as an elder statesman before he does irreparable damage to his legacy.
@AceLuby Well, What was it that The Obama was doing the night of this act of terrorism? Where was he, what was he doing, He allowed 4) Americans to be killed. Your media wont report on the truth as usual. Your people are part of the cover up. Was your guy The Obama aka "The King" too busy prepairing for David Letterman? You seem not to want the truth, What would you be doing and saying wright now if the guy was a Republican? would you be hidding behind your liberal double standard then?
@Vance1 So you don't know even IF there is a cover up, what they are covering up, or why, but you're sure there was one. Thanks for proving my point that you don't have anything to base this off of.
Also, you do realize that over 40 Americans died in the last administration under similar circumstances and 2,000 civilians died here on our own soil, yet not once was there a hearing to find out who failed in these cases and what they are covering up. Liberal double standard? Nope, that would be your double standard and your hypocrisy, not mine.
I don't like McCain. I really don't. He's wrong on so many issues. However, here? On this Benghazi issue, McCain is absolutely right. It was good to see him show some fire in the belly and stand up for Americans everywhere and demand answers, and not let the ultra liberal Gregory try to back him down. Good job McCain. Maybe if this was you in 2008, we wouldn't be stuck with you know who.
McCain is an angry old man. It's time for time to fade away. But maybe if we get very, very lucky he and Sarah Palin will run again like an oldies band that keeps reuniting. They can do their greatest hits, "Bomb, Bomb Iran" and "I can see Russia from my house"
This is just a witch hunt to make the president look as bad as possible nothing more. It's pathetic how come these republicans didn't go on a all out witch hunt after 40 people died in different attacks throughout bushes administration. There were 40 people killed in different consulate and embassy attacks under bush why is it a huge deal all of a sudden under Obama??? Seems like bias unfair targeting to me 40 people die under bushes incompetence not including the thousands that died in 9/11 attacks and the thousands that died in the two wars he started 3 messily people die on obamas watch and now it's a big deal with cover ups that got to the highest points in gov...give me a break!!!!
Despite 20 hearings, 10,000 pages of documentation, a scathing ARB, Sen McCain still gets invited to go on national television and repeat Mitt Romney's laughably wrong "waited two weeks to call it a terrorist attack" and then allege some sort of "massive coverup" by the guy who resoundingly won the 2008 election versus the Senator. Man, talk about a guy who doesn't handle defeat well.
Four Americans died in Africa in a hostile environment surrounded by radical extremists, and politicians are tearing their hair out to put people on trial.
2,604 Americans died on our own soil after terrorists were given enough room to make a highly calculated, strategic attack in what we believed was a secure and safe border, despite clear warnings to the presidential administration and intelligence agencies. No trial or presumed coverup.
I believe there has been a major cover up and shifting of blame on Benghazi. I also believe the press have forgotten Benghazi and are failing to pursue this tragedy. Why was this consulate not protected, especially on September 11? I would have thought there would have been an increase in security at all U.S. embassies for September 11. This should have been standard protocol. I believe all responsible parties were too interested in winning the election and not monitoring or responding to normal duties. Personally, if I were President and Commander-in-Chief, or U.S. Secretary of Defense, I would have had the smarts to make sure all embassies were on the alert, and taking extra security measures, on September 11, especially in an election year. What better time for an attack than when all of the U.S. is concentrating on the election coming up and all the election campaign activities? People in the highest positions in our government sometimes show an extreme blindness, stupidity and ignorance of terrorist threats and the way terrorists operate. How long does it take to get the message through all their heads that we are still at war with people who hate us, will do anything do destroy us, and will take advantage in any slip in our security? They declared war on us and last I heard, they have not declared a truce or peace. I, for one, applaud Senator McCain and hope he will continue in his efforts to find out what happened.
@formerrepub Having seen how our government work corruptly for over 40 years, that's all I can do. No matter who is President, it is corrupt from top to bottom. All one can do is minimize how much you are going to get screwed.
