The upscale Houston suburb of Sugar Land is the recipient of a very odd solicitation. The dating website SugarDaddie.com, which helps match wealthy men and women with eager lovers, is offering the city a hefty sum of money in exchange for giving up its identity. Some would say its soul.
"SugarDaddie.Com, USA" would be the new moniker for the city of 80,000 if Mayor James A. Thompson agrees to the $4.65 million bid,
reports TIME. And while Thompson has thus far "politely declined" the offer in an informal fashion, he's expected to announce his decision to accept or reject the offer from SugarDaddie CEO Steven Pasternack on Tuesday.
"We are very serious about branding the city and giving birth to the first dating site-sponsored city in America," said Pasternack, who chose Sugar Land due its similarity to his site's URL and presumably its reputation for money, class and the good life, all things
SugarDaddie.com would like to think it represents.
If Pasternack's bid fails, he claims, the jurisdictions of Sugar City, Colorado, and Sugar Creek, Missouri are next in line for consideration. Unfortunately for the site's image,
neither locale can tout the demographic chic of Sugar Land, whose median income is over
twice that of the Texas average.
