Some people truly do not have a clue. I have to wonder if he gave his mom a quality whistle for her birthday.

Far lefties are saying that because Akin made similar comments, that this will be the downfall of the Republican Party. I guess Salazar will be the downfall of the Dems as well.

There Dems, now you can share the wealth!

This isn't about party politics... It's about how ignorant some men can be about women's issues. And no one party has a monopoly on ignorance about women.

    @DogLady_1

Ignorant is an insult to ignorant people. This guy is completely oblivious not only to women, but about life as a whole.

@thatgirl then you're one of the few liberals that look past party-line. Good for you. Glad to know there is still at least one out there...

No where near as bad as Asscan's.
But whistle? That's old school, women with whistles. For up close and personal, I say women should carry tasers if they don't want to carry handguns. Zap the rapist right in his little tallywacker! That'll shrivel it fast as an ice dip!

I'd much rather a law abiding citizen simply kill the SOB. Society would be much better off. I have no sympathy for rapists. This "cures" a rapist and costs society little.

@Keyjo and I respect their decision to choose not to carry as well as carry if it is their desire. Nothing should force a person to be armed if they choose to not have a gun.

"Joe Salazar is a 'full-blown Akin," More like....Salazar is a "full blown" azzhole! Wonder if he will still be "Whistling Dixie" when I plant that whistle up his kazoo!

In some cases a whistle would be enough to stop a rape, but it would actually be no more effective than a scream at the top of her lungs. I would think that 99% of all women carrying a gun would not shoot any that just appears to be following her. Also she would pull the gun and threaten to shoot before shooting. Proper methods should be taught to anyone packing or even owning a gun. Any man who then does not back off and turn to walk the other way probably deserves to be shot. I am sure that in some cases a lady does not have the ability to get to the gun before the rapist grabs her. I support women carrying mace, whistles, guns or anything else a woman wants to pack to defend against rapists. None of those things will be used against me even if were pulled on me. I do not put people in situations where they feel unsafe around me.

I have the training. One of the key methods of self defense is to not let anyone get within 7 yards of you. I have more faith in a Wilson combat .45 acp than a whistle. Once I draw its up to the attacker whether I shoot or not.
  • !
@NTBFW The safe distance depends on the circumstances. In broad daylight on a busy street 7 yards is not much. After dark, yes that is a good rule. Especially considering how much distance a person can cover in the time it takes to pull a gun. I personally never carry a gun but I have had a knife that I could easily open one handed in my hand while walking at night. I think being very observant and conscious of your surrounding is the best defense against any violent attacks.
In college I would see reports of girls getting raped and a descriptions of the attacker. Well over 90% were between 1 am and 5 am mostly. They were out drinking and walking home. I am not blaming the girls but they put themselves in vulnerable situations that should have been avoided.

@crusader I've found that when carrying my body language is different I don't walk like a victim. What you are talking about is situational awareness. It's not hard to avoid dangerous situations. Just pay attention. Drawing my weapon is a last resort. It's for when all else fails.
  • !
@NTBFW You have no idea how foolish "not let anyone get within 7 yards of you" is. Are you drawing down on people in the grocery lines these days? Backing them up in Walmart? Setting up a perimeter at the gas pumps? Holy toledo Just what America needs. Everyone at a sporting event facing off with guns during the National Anthem.
  • !
@jessejaymes you know good and well what I'm talking about. I haven't drawn a weapon needlessly ever. Don't start your foolishness today. That was an entirely foolish statement. The seven yard rule applies in situations where there is a potential for danger. Thank god you don't carry since you don't have enough sense to know when or when not to uses a weapon.

Even if you find Salazar's comment misguided, it comes from a place of wanting to help, not to demean and insult, like Akin did. A lot of women I know already have whistles or mace ( or pepper spray) on them at all times. Reminds me of that woman from the 70's movie Foul PLay ( with Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn) who shows Goldie her purse full of rape-deterrent devices.

Wanting to help, but prefers to stay ignorant? It's insulting that a man would come out and make public comments about something he knows nothing about, and obviously hasn't even tried to learn anything... I'm sure he read a few reports and asked questions before making recommendations about war and taxation! There are any number of women within earshot of a congressman who would be happy to tell them what they think about rape whistles and call boxes. There are numerous reports that could be read... I would find it far more impressive for a man to tell the public, "Look, I don't know what the best way is for women to avoid getting raped, but I welcome suggestions, insights and comments from women who would like to help me understand."

The man is an idiot. Whistles? Oh let me dig in the bottom of my purse to find a small whistle. Or maybe she should carry it on a string around her neck when she steps out for the night in her little black dress and her whistle? Get a stun gun. It's legal most states, easy to get out quickly and just the sound of it is enough to have people backing up RIGHT NOW.

Sitting with my nose in my first cup o' mud this morning I caught part of a news story where the White House(?) put out a statement regarding school attacks that went something like "don't arm teachers and don't cower". I'm sitting there thinking,"Yeah, death by a thousand paper cuts. That'll work".

    Sheesh.

Shooting the wrong person? The penis would probably be a good indicator of who to shoot. Democrats have to assume everyone out there has the intellect of your... what is the PC term for them...??? Uh, "intellectually impaired person" because anyone who listens to this insane rambling usually is.

he is more than welcome to come into the gang areas of ca, blow his own whistle and see if help gets there before the gangs get him,it this day and time maybe even rape him, maybe a call box would help him at that exact moment when he sees he is about to get got.

Wow. Lets put this nutcase in a room full of male prison rapists with us whistle and see how long it takes it to be used as a sex toy. What a moron. I hope he doesn't have a wife or children and if he does I hope they have their whistle in their purses and no security detail.
