Missouri lawmakers would be sent to jail for proposing gun control legislation, if one of their colleagues has his way.
State Rep. Mike Leara, a St. Louis County Republican, has proposed a bill making it a felony punishable with up to four years in prison for anyone who proposes "a piece of legislation that further restricts the right of an individual to bear arms, as set forth under the second amendment of the Constitution of the United States."
Leara said he filed the bill as a matter of principle and doesn't expect it to pass.
"I have no illusions about the bill making it through the legislative process, but I want it to be clear that the Missouri House will stand in defense of the people's constitutional right to keep and bear arms," he said in a statement.
Rep. Charlie Norr, D-Springfield, told the News-Leader newspaper that debates should be allowed on the issue of gun control.
"That's like the most absurd thing I've heard in my life," Norr said about the bill.
