About freaking time we started with some SANITY regarding foreign relations. We are so hypocritical when it comes to dictators... "These dictators are bad... these ones are ok... until they aren't"

I agree with Sen. Menendez -- and then some. Yes we should have open trade and cooperative relations. But not while Fidel Castro is alive and/or the Cuban government is communist. How about we finish the job that JFK started? How many countries have had, or tried to have, nuclear warheads ready to launch at America? And how many miles offshore? Whatever it takes, Cuba needs to go the way of Puerto Rico. It will be a better place all around under the flag of the United States.

@DB-Grinberg Isn't it obvious that after 50 years we're never going to finish the job JFK started? Isn't it a bit hypocritical to not trade w/ Cuba because they are 'communist' with an 'evil dictator' when we actively trade with China and have propped up countless dictators all across the globe? The only place that should have a United States flag under it is the United States. We are not a world govt and this idea that we should be has costed us trillions in debt and millions of lives lost. When will enough be enough?

@AceLuby - Unlike Cuba, other dictatorships, communist and totalitarian regimes -- which hate America and democracy -- are NOT a mere 90 miles off the U.S. shore.

We have more important things to deal with. Cuba is changing under Raul Castro as opposed to Fidel. they are both OLD men. We need to encourage those changes.

@PNWest And according to investigation reports he also has a wealth of experience in foreign underaged prostitutes.
  • !
@PNWest Apparently to date, the only lack of experience that Menendez has in the world of foreign relations is an degree in advanced top tapping in men's bathroom stalls.

@DARSB - "After his relationship with Melgen came under scrutiny, Menendez reimbursed Melgen $58,000 for two of three trips he took on Melgen's plane to the Dominican Republic in 2010. The senator called the tardy reimbursement an honest oversight and says the allegations against him are "absolutely false."" - I wish I could forget about $58,000! An honest oversight, ha!

You're right, it should have been done long ago. If you consider some of the nations we have relations with plus those we consider allies, it's silly to keep sanctions against Cuba.

It's been long enough! Fidel is not in power, his younger brother is. This Castro is much different than his bother! Imagine how happy the people in Cuba would be to see the tourism industry pop up? There would be many, many jobs created by tourism alone! They would no longer live in poverty. Hey you men, legal Cuban cigars! The ability of family reunions for the Cuban Americans to finally see home again or for younger to see Cuba for the first time.

I've been wanting to try a Cuban Cigar for a while now, I fear them being legal will take away the forbidden fruit effect I will get from smoking one. Just gotta act quick I guess!

something about taking US property and shooting down unarmed planes. Just furthers the shortsightedness of our foreign policy.

I select YES, but the commie dictatorship isn't going anywhere. But normalizing relations should at least help the people of Cuba to access US markets and the economy it might work its way to a loving socialist dictatorship instead of a hating communist dictatorship.

Long overdue. They have been spanked enough for the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Soviet Union is long gone. Castro is on his last leg. We should annex Cuba.

I hate being forced to choose from a very limited set of responses.

Dropping sanctions will not topple Castro, nor would we want it to do that.
All we need right now is another revolution.

Dropping sanction will allow the regime to wither away from lack of participation.
Cuba could return to being one of our best trading partners.

Expect opposition from any interest that believes it might be negatively affected, like Disney, or Big Sugar.
Don't let that stifle progress on this front.

It is called the Cuba Exile Effect. You get a small group that has enough people to influence state elections, who also live in a battle ground state, and thus can influence national elections.

Sanctions for over 50 years has not brought the demise of the Castro government any more than sanctions have destroyed the leadership of Iran.Cuba is a different nation that gave up the thought of nukes long ago it is perhaps time to welcome them in some way.Learn from 50 years of mistakes dont give Iran that same 50 it will be far to late.

Every new Secty of State since Kissinger has said he was going to have diplomatic rltns with Cuba when he came into office. Let's ask Mr. Kerry in a few weeks how things are going with Cuba. Ain't gonna happen.
