Laura Bush Divorces Herself From Same-Sex Marriage Ad

The former First Lady has been removed at her request

Former First Lady Laura Bush asked to be removed from a $1 million national multi-media ad campaign supporting the legalization of gay marriage.

Bush spokeswoman Anne MacDonald said Wednesday that the former first lady "did not approve of her inclusion in this advertisement nor is she associated with the group that made the ad in any way."

The ad by the Respect for Marriage Coalition, a group of LGBT, civil rights and labor organizations, was designed to highlight bipartisan support for marriage equality. It featured video clips from Bush, President Barack Obama, former Vice President Dick Cheney and former Secretary of State Colin Powell making statements supportive of gay marraige.

"When couples are committed to each other and love each other then they ought to have the same sort of rights that everyone has," Bush was shown saying on CNN in a 2010 interview with Larry King.

The group will release a new ad replacing Bush with a Republican former Marine, Craig Stowell, who speaks about how he came to support gay marriage after learning his brother was gay, Politico reports.

The people who put the ad together failed to get the permission of the people they used. No one's image or words should be used in advertizing without their expressed written permission. I think the group owes Mrs. Bush an apology. What they did was presumptuous.

As one of the two members of the Bush family I hold in some regard (the other is brother Jeb, but only when he's not being a doofus) Ms Bush's message in the ad was encouraging. A shame she withdrew.

Its not like someone took her picture and put their words in her mouth. If she is worried about damaging her brand to late her husband already did. She should have said nothing about the ad and erred on the right side of history same sex marriage will happen in the next few years. Be like Eleanor Roosevelt and enjoy the ride!!

@wonka45ACP Its a big difference if you are a public figure she wasn't misquoted her likeness and speeches are public record. She knows more than anyone one that when she makes a statement people listen. These are her true thoughts even though @ this time they may not be mainstream. Of course I would be highly upset if someone did that but I am not a public figure.

@wonka45ACP Wow! where did that come from. If she said it in a public forum then its fair game to use it. If someone made it up to push a agenda then yes of cource she has a right not to be slandered. Public speach is public speace if I walked thru times square saying that Dick Chaney is a member of friend of hamas and someone took my picture and put it in the daily news I couldn't whine about them putting it in the paper and that would go doubble if I was a public figure.

It was pretty obvious that the quote was used without her permission. I think a bit less of the Respect for Marriage Coalition for not securing permission prior. Kinda cheapens the ad.
