Mississippi Wants To Lure Gunmakers

Move comes as other states are spurning firearms manufacturers

A top Mississippi politician has a way to lure economic development to his state: Having gun manufactures relocate there.

Mississippi House Speaker Philip Gunn (R) sent letters to 14 gun manufacturing companies inviting them to come to the gun-friendly state, the Jackson Clarion-Ledger reports.

"We need more businesses to establish home base in Mississippi," Gunn said. "We can provide these companies with an educated workforce, a superior quality of life, an evolving education system for their children, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing we support their industry."

The move comes as other states are aim to distance themselves from gun manufactures. The investment committee of California Public Employees' Retirement System, the biggest American pension fund, recently voted to divest itself of its holdings in two manufacturers of guns and high-capacity ammunition clips banned in California.

That move affects about $5 million in investments in the Smith & Wesson Holding Corporation and Sturm, Ruger & Company at the $254 billion.

    @AnnieO Well hell, it only took Kentucky until 1976 to finally pass the 13th amendment to end slavery---and Mississippi more than 148 years to do likewise. Those two states seem to be far behind the rest of America on most important things anyway...So who cares...

    @Sonny Oh yes, and you folks from liberal states like California are just so far ahead of the us in the south, lol. Btw, how far in the red are they on their budget now? Like a $16 billion budget deficit? And high unemployment to boot. And now those genius are pushing away more businesses, jobs and tax revenue? All for that warm and fuzzy, smug, high and mighty feel-good PC feeling, huh? Lol...

    There used to be a saying. If America needed an enema, Mississippi is where they'd put the hose. Why is it that states with the crappiest reputations seem to never do anything to change it?

    Why is it that once a state gets a crappy reputation, no one pays attention to the improvements it makes? You know, it's like a "once crappy, always crappy" mentality... Mississippi has a bone-head governor right now who used to be the Lt Gov to another bone-head governor... but the people of MS are not crappy at all. They just, like many other states, have too many boneheads with too much power, and they stifle the good people's voice.

    As a younger feller, I used to hit all the SEC football games. One of my favorites was OL MISS campus. It just had a singularity about it. MS folks are OK in my book (of course I work in and out of MS a lot).

    One of the reasons the south lost the first time around was all the firearms manufacturers were north of the mason dixon line and they had to import everything.Actually I don't care where they are as long as they keep the QC up to snuff.

    @NTBFW Have not looked much lately, currently putting my pennies aside for a colt national match a neighbor is selling, belonged to her husband who passed away. Most of my long guns are Sako's except for a Remington 788 in .44mag which is my brush gun.

    @fistv Sounds like you know Quality. SAKO's are awesome. But I shot a new 70 the other day and was very impressed. FN is actually building them. They are even nicer than the old Belgium Brownings. I have some of all of them but my pre 64 model 70 featherweight .270 is one of my favorites. But it's a safe queen now.

    @NTBFW no safe queens, everything gets used. Though I am going to downsize from a gold cup to a defender at some point. Went from a jeep to a 13 impreza sport and it's a bit tighter fit but I'm loving the gas savings. More money for toys :-)

    Business and citizens who believe in the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and freedom and America should all leave states like California, New York, New Jersey, and a few others that have become separatist states run by puppet governors and legislatures. Money is the only language those people care about, as they obviously don't care about anyone else's rights or the Constitution.

    I'd like to see a grand social experiment, where the Liberals all move to their utopia paradises they're creating like California, NY, NJ, Mass, CT, VT, Mich, etc and the Conservatives all move to conservative states, and then agree to get along as nieghboring states and bascially treat each area as a separate country in certain ways.Keep the Federal Government mostly on furlough for a couple decades so they cannot screw things up any more than they have, and see just how things turn out for each group. After a few decades then each side will be able to see their good and bad points.

    @ZombieMedic No one wants a civil war, we are willing to fight if we have to not that we want to. The thought of taking any more lives then i already have makes me sick to my stomach but if need be I would fight again for my freedoms and rights.

    I heard that saying, but New Jersey was used as the insertion point. Have no issue with either state.. Hope Mississippi has a ton of success with increasing business!

    Kinda funny considering that up until the Great Depression, Blacks outnumbered all other groups combined, and still account for almost half of the population and representing the largest single ethnic group in the state, and the highest Black population (percentage wise) in the country of all states.

    I don't see anything about any other state allowing any gun manufactured in their state to be fully legal with no registration. That's huge, not that it should be but it is.

    Hahaha..."evolved education system," where according to Fox Business, 6.6% of adults haven't completed 9th grade, and they are 49th in the country in percentage of educated individuals.

    Go for it Mississippi!! The governor should be contacting their corporations and as always give incentives to lure them. I think Mississippi would be a great place to relocate to!!!

    As long as the taxpayers don't mind paying to "lure" businesses and don't get upset when the businesses pack up and move when another state offers a better incentive. Have a hunch the mississippians are too dimwitted to notice they are being screwed. If the gunmaker is sued in a wrongful death suit then the state could be held liable for luring the business to the state by a quick witted lawyer. Given that juries, in america, like to make large awards this could be one of the more expensive lures of this fishing expedition.

    Texas, South Dakota, and now Mississippi all looking to lure the gunmakers kicked out of the liberal havens. Freedom loving states welcome business. There are about 30 states that still show some sanity and belief in the Constitution.
