Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer warns that 'our border is not secure,' claiming she saw "drug cartels ready to come across in the middle of the night" while on a recent helicopter tour of the area.
Brewer made the comment Friday on Fox News about the Mexico-Arizona border, Politico reports.
"Our fences aren't completed," Brewer said. "We don't have enough people on the ground. I was just down there last week. I was with the National Guard. I was in a Blackhawk. I saw them on the other side, the drug cartels, ready to come across in the middle of the night. It is not secure."
Customs and Border Protection tells a different story, Politico reports. Illegal crossings into Arizona are at a two-decade low, the agency said.
Brewer said she thought there "wouldn't be a lot of movement" on immigration reform legislation until the federal government can assure people living near the border that it's secure.
