First Lady Michelle Obama made a surprise appearance at the Academy Awards. Via video, Obama introduced the nominees for the Academy Awards' Best Picture category and announced the movie "Argo" had won the night's top award.

The first lady's communications director, Kristina Schake, said in a statement that the Academy Awards "approached the first lady about being a part of the ceremony," Politico reported.

"As a movie lover, she was honored to present the award and celebrate the artists who inspire us all - especially our young people - with their passion, skill and imagination," Schake said.

The appearance drew mixed reaction on Twitter.

* Television writer @Alexa_Michelle: "Michelle Obama's speech just made the Oscars even longer... That wasn't necessary".

* The New Republic's Noam Scheiber (@noamscheiber): "I'm a big Michelle Obama fan, but I fear she jumped the shark tonight. On the bright side: Maybe they'll call off her Mad Men cameo now..."

    You know what right wingers remind me of? I have two dogs. One older one younger. The older dog can be napping and the young dog comes over for a pet the old dog jumps right up and comes pushing her way past the young dog to get her's FIRST. You right wingers aren't upset that Michelle Obama gave out an award. You're upset one of yours didn't. It's call petty jealousy.

    In related news the Los Angeles Gay men's choir sang. Can you imagine there ever being a time (or being allowed) that the "Los Angeles Straight men's choir" would be asked to performed? This is what just burns me up about gays. I though you wanted equality? Having an exclusionary choir of all men would be discrimination. Women would sue on that grounds. Having a straight male choir would be discriminatory against women and gay men. BUT YET somehow it's not discriminatory for gay males to have their own discriminatory choir. It's not about equality is it? It's about special rights.

    @jessejaymes In all seriousness I know a guy in a different gay men's chorus and they do let any men in gay or straight. The name is indicative of their target audience - not discriminatory.

    @PNWest If it's not discriminatory to say "The Gay men's choir" then it's not discriminatory to say the "Straight Men's choir": Yet that would never be allowed in America even if they let gay men sing as well and you know it. It's all bullshirt gay agenda to try and shove acceptance down people's throat and I for one am becoming less tolerant that I was two years ago because the world doesn't revolve around gay men despite what they seem to think.

    I hate her "bangs" look that everyone was fussing about. They make her look like an old woman trying to look young. The arrangement of gaudily dressed servants who are staring at her adoringly make me wonder if she ever got over her childhood dream of being a princess. I find it very hard to accept any of Barack Obama's gestures about balancing the budget and reducing the deficit while he and his wife are trying to outspend and outshine Britain's Royal Family. Want to reduce government spending? Stop spending hundreds of thousands on clothes, stay at home and watch TV like your broke-ass citizens instead of flying off on expensive vacations all of the time. What part of "Public Service" means that you get to spend tax payer money like Louis XIV?

    @tgirl2 I mentioned her hair because it is apparent in the photograph that goes with the story. Reminds me of a sheepdog. At least she isn't wearing that expensive copy of the Star Trek Romulan Commander outfit that she wore for the inauguration. I didn't watch the Academy Award show, so I don't know what Adele's hair looked like. I had more important things to do, like clipping my toenails.

    I'll add your description of me as a right wing meme repeater to the stack of accusations of being a war monger, socialist, communist, left wing liberal Obama worshipper, and all of the other shallow, dismissive responses that I've gotten over time.

    @tgirl2 I've been bombarded with the same fashion shows, beauty tips and American top model BS that every American who ever watched broadcast TV has been. I know about Versace and Gucci and that the Devil wears Prada. I know that my wife can buy a Coach clone knock-off purse for $15 that looks exactly the same as a "real" one other women pay hundreds for. I know that designer dresses are very expensive and often poorly made. I imagine that your snarky comments are probably what got your first account suspended, also. Going for two?

    @Dan_Tien Learning the difference between "designer" and "couture" would be the place to start for you. Also, one can only suppose that you are acknowledging that you're really not complaining about Michelles bangs, you're complaining because shes black, a Democrat, and in the White House.

    On the other hand we had Nancy Reagan consulting astrologers and trying to steal the White House China and giving advice to her husband who had Alzheimer disease. On balance I prefer Michelle. I actually like her more than her husband but that's just me. .

    @jessejaymes Thank you, and it does chap my ass that every time we get a new president they all spend millions on their taste improvements. I can see new paint every five-8 years, but furniture, curtains, dishes, and other needless spending is deplorable. If I can go ten years with my diningroom and livingroom set why can't they? I'd love to see a president (demo or rep) say enough is enough and set the example of being tight with taxpayer money.

    I wonder how much it cost the tax payer for her get up to try to look fabulous? hairdo, makeup, camera crew, additional security, new dress and tailors. And Obama says spending is not out of control-Hmmmmm? I do believe I just saw another example of an unlimited checkbook for our king and queen to do whatever they want at taxpayer expense. Even die hard democrats can see this on their private ski vacations, and golf with Tiger Woods. Their only arguement is comparing them to past republican presidents, but as bad as Bush was he did give up golf while the country was at war. Obama just spends more taxpayer dollars without a thought of how hard we work for our money. But when you have never had to actually earn a living in the private sector then you are clueless. He's a career politician hell bent on destroying this country from the inside out. Can't believe the democrats approve of this waste of taxpayer dollars.

    The camera crew would likely be provided by the academy. Designers knock each other loaning presenters gowns and jewelry. I fail to see why extra security would be necessary over a small camera crew being in the White House.

    Remember when Obama started 2 wars that there wasn't money for while giving tax breaks? No? Hmmm.

    Obama has taken less vacation days then any other recent president has during the 1st term. Which do you think costs less, a trip to a TX ranch or a round of golf?

    But why let reality get in the way of you being pissed off at President Blackenstein for doing what they've all done.

And just so you know, her makeup and hair were probably done by artists working for the Academy, which, by the way, why do you think the camera crews were not working for the network? Her dress was on loan, it will be announced tomorrow on all the gossip shows and give a big sales boost to the designer. If I were you, I dont think I would be ranting about something I SO obviously know nothing about. Kinda makes one look petty and small.

    @tgirl2 Extra security for this to include the make up is not donated by the academy. Don't even go there think hollywooders just walk in to the white house. Background checks are performed and that cost money. I will rant everytime nomatter who is president when I see any politician or their wives wasting my money and having the gall to ask for more taxes. BTW Obama didn't give anyone a tax break, and look at the gas prices that he fails to adress. Presidents before him have released our oil stockpiles to counter the Arabs lower productions which is very little since we get most from countries like Venezuala. Sorry you had to read my rants. Guess it's OK to you for politicians continuing to raise your taxes, while spending more of it for personal pleasures, while you pay $4.00 a gallon for gas.

    @tgirl2 If the politicians can control what a gallon of milk cost they can certainly release reserves to combat cost. Also we need the pipeline bad, and to do more offshore drilling. Other countries are doing it near our borders so why shouldn't we? If you look back presidents have released reserves to bring prices down. Fox right now is adressing that issue on how to lower cost. The middle east is toying with us. How about we toy with them and cut off all aid, trade, and quit buying from them altogether? We need to gain control of our economy-not Opec, not China, or Mexico.
    But all the politicians are dirty and making millions while turning a blind eye. But Obama could do something, and you are dead wrong thinking he can't.

    I felt like it politicized the show. Honestly, Hollywood acts like teacher's pets towards a teacher when there's a Democratic President in office, especially with President Obama and his family. Personally, I don't think First Lady Michelle Obama ought to have acted as a Presentor, but felt that President Obama should have at LEAST been nominated for an Oscar after the Newtown Massacre.
