A small town North Carolina newspaper has issued an agonizing apology for requesting public records on local gun owners. Their
mea culpa is being
described as an "awe-inspiring work" of "obsequiousness" by tech-site
Boing Boing.
"I want to apologize to everyone we unintentionally upset with our public records request for a list of those who have or have applied for a concealed carry permit,"
wrote the publisher of the
Cherokee Scout, David Brown, to his readers in and around the town of Murphy. "We had no idea the reaction it would cause."
Brown went on to thank (and also apologize to) local sheriff Keith Lovin for his help in quelling the negative public feedback to the records request, and to reassure the people of Murphy that the paper "never meant to offend the wonderful people of this fine community."
As if that wasn't enough, Brown felt the need to detail that not only did he go to high school in Murphy, but he was baptized and married there.
"I know where this community is coming from, and I hope we can regain your trust," wrote Brown, pleadingly. "I know it may take a while, but we're going to try."
