Rep. Walter Jones supported the Iraq War a decade ago. But the North Carolina Republican quickly turned on the military campaign and the occupation after. Along with former Rep. Ron Paul (Texas), Jones became a leading GOP critic of the George W. Bush administration on Iraq.
And Jones has a specific culprit in mind: former Vice President Dick Cheney. Jones said at a conference recently that Cheney would probably end up in hell for the Iraq War, Huffington Post reports.
"Congress will not hold anyone to blame. Lyndon Johnson's probably rotting in hell right now because of the Vietnam War, and he probably needs to move over for Dick Cheney," Jones said at a Young Americans for Liberty conference in Raleigh, N.C. The group is a spinoff from former Paul's 2008 presidential campaign.
It wasn't always this way for Jones. He voted for the Iraq War resolution and circulated a letter in 2003 to change the name of french fries to "freedom fries" in the House cafeterias. He has since regretted it and become a staunch opponent of the war.
"I knew that those who do not fight like myself, it's easy to be macho man, and declare war, get that son of a bitch ... I am so fed up with people who do not understand the pain of war," he said told the North Carolina audience.
