Todd Akin. Richard Mourdock. Christine O'Donnell. And Steve King? Democrats are hoping Iowa voters associate the controversial congressman with recent GOP Senate nominees who lost winnable races.
Rep. Tom Latham (R-Iowa) said Wednesday he will not run for the Senate in 2014, citing a commitment to the voters who elected him to the House. The Washington Post reports. Latham had been mulling a bid for retiring Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin's seat and was viewed as a top potential prospect.
Latham's move clears the way for King to enter the race, which he's been hinting at for some time. King, in Congress since 2003, is known for his outspoken views and very conservative politics. On the Democratic side, Rep. Bruce Braley (D) is running and should have the inside track to the nomination.
Here are some of King's statements Democrats would likely use against him were he the nominee.
* King called criticism of Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin's statement about "legitimate rape" to be "petty personal attacks" and also called Akin a "strong Christian man".
* In March 2008 King said of then-candidate Barack Obama, "If he is elected president, then the radical Islamists, the al Qaeda, the radical Islamists and their supporters, will be dancing in the streets in greater numbers than they did on September 11 because they will declare victory in this War on Terror."
