UN Takes bin Laden Off Sanctions List

It only took almost two years

While the US was busy debating the ethics of a movie about the hunt for Osama bin Laden, the UN was finally coming around to taking him off their sanctions list - nearly two years after his death.

In little-read news, the UN Security Council approved the cessation of sanctions against the former head of al-Qaida on February 21st. The action ends an asset freeze, arms embargo, and travel ban on a man who didn't feel the pinch from any of it for the last 10 months.

"Bin Laden's removal from the list is a purely technical matter, and was conducted under the provisions related to deceased persons," stated Kurtis Cooper, deputy spokesman for the US Mission to the United Nations. "This action in no way signals a change in the international or US position on al-Qaida or Osama bin Laden's role in the tragic events of 9/11 and other terrorist acts and support."

Are there serious consequences to waiting so long to remove OBL from the UN sanctions list, or is this nothing more than amusing news?

Probably just clerical BS. After thirty years I still get company mail under three different names. But it can get interesting when I get duplicate pay checks.

It happens. The US Government mailed out visa renewal papers to many of the 09/11/2001 hijackers long after they had died committing those thousands of heinous murders. I'm still waiting for a label from Century Link to return their rental modem that I requested from them on 02/13/2013. It's now 02/28/2013 and I still don't have either of the two labels they've claimed they've mailed. Century Link is right next to us. Century Link now claims a 3rd is being mailed. The bigger organizations are, the more prone they are to one hand not knowing what the other one is doing.

UN Incompetence, typical. I say it's high time the USA cuts off a considerable percentage of funds towards the UN. Let these other countries throw more in the pot.
