While the US was busy
debating the ethics of a movie about the hunt for Osama bin Laden, the UN was finally coming around to taking him off their sanctions list - nearly two years after his death.
In little-read
news, the UN Security Council approved the cessation of sanctions against the former head of al-Qaida on February 21st. The action ends an asset freeze, arms embargo, and travel ban on a man who didn't feel the pinch from any of it for the last 10 months.
"Bin Laden's removal from the list is a purely technical matter, and was conducted under the provisions related to deceased persons," stated Kurtis Cooper, deputy spokesman for the US Mission to the United Nations. "This action in no way signals a change in the international or US position on al-Qaida or Osama bin Laden's role in the tragic events of 9/11 and other terrorist acts and support."
