'Coming After the Standard Shotgun': Colorado Bill is Under Fire

A bill that's passed the Colorado House legislature could ban the state's most popular hunting shotgun.

"They're coming after the standard shotgun," Republican state Sen. Greg Brophy told CBS4. "This is the most extreme thing anybody's ever done related to firearms."

The bill is supposed to ban high-capacity ammunition magazines, and defines them as magazines that can hold or be converted to hold over 15 rounds or eight shotgun shells.

The "can be converted" part is where the problem arises. The pump or semi-automatic shotgun is the state's most popular, according to CBS Denver, and it can easily be converted to hold more that eight rounds.

The bill will ban new sales of the shotgun after July 1, and owners can only keep the shotgun if they "maintain continuous possession of it," which means they can't surrender it to a gun owner for repair or to a family member to use.

Democratic lawmakers say they're drafting an amendment that will exempt the shotgun from the law.

Colorado is looking at a raft of gun bills that are making gun owners anxious, including a Democratic proposal to make sellers and owners of assault weapons liable for damages caused by shootings.

Biden told Colorado Democrats last month that the bills would "send a strong message to the rest of the country that a Western state had passed gun-control bills."

    My understanding is correct Biden technique is to empty a double barrel shotgun in a door, or a cloud when faced by a violent predator.

    Doesn't suprise me when Biden said shoot through the door. After all, the FBI shot through the door and killed an unarmed woman holding a baby at Ruby Ridge Idaho. These are the same people who don't trust us with guns and they do stupid things like this.

    There's something about the image of Joe Biden with a shotgun that weakens my support of the Second Amendment. I would not mind banning shotguns in exchange for revoking the ban, on, say, mortars. Biden with a mortar is a much more pleasant image.

    This looks like a case is simple unintended consequences, and as the article mentions the legislators are working on an amendment to exempt shotguns. I would support the ban on high capacity magazines, but not a ban on shotguns.

    You are aware that shotguns can cause much more damage in 5 rounds than a 30 rounds of .223, right? Shotguns are destructive weapons while the common 5.56 is a wounding round. I know what you're saying and if you don't want a 30 round mag, don't but one.

    There was nothing unintended about this.

    @wonka45ACP actually, I do. Do you know why? Because no court in their right mind would allow a law to stand that outlawed a t round pump action. Legislators may be dumb, but they aren't that dumb.

    @zachsquatch I am well aware of the damage potential, and I personally believe ownership of a shotgun is a much more effective for home defense. However, I do believe that this is an oversight for the reasons listed above. Have you made room for the fact that republicans may have found a loophole, and are exploiting it for political capital? I doubt you would allow for the fact that could be the case.

    Joe Biden better speak out against this bill. If he doesn't, he's a flat out hypocrite. With a straight face, he told the nation that his wife, with armed security with M16s in possession, should step outside and fire a 12 ga double barrel shotgun at no ID'd target, just shoot it and that will scare any perp. Then he said that shotguns are easier to control and shoot than an AR type weapon, which is laughable, but it has to be the truth. This action by CO goes against the liberal agenda by default.

You claim an absolute right to gun ownership based on some fairly vague rhetorical wording by people who never envisioned anything more than a black powder musket. You think you can act like Al Capone and Nazi Storm Troopers all rolled into one while identifying yourselves to America as the same people who refuses to compromise on abortion,(you're religious zealot losers with guns to most of America's view), you do stupid things like associate guns to most people as being the same people that worship the Confederate Flag, want violent revolution against our govt, talk secession and hate minorities right up until this recent push to get blacks to further arm themselves in the urban areas, against each other.

    You have a serious image problem to the middle class of America, with moderates, with women, Latinos, gays, blacks, You have a "redneck bubba" image. Just as most of America really doesn't care for the extremist left wing "Fem-Nazi" image of the white man hating, left wing compulsive-obsessive obese rhetoric babble of the socialistic state left, America has no more use for the "redneck bubba's" than the "Fem Nazi's". And you have the guns. And brag about it. And threaten to start civil wars with them. You have a white supremacist image and you don't care.

    You come on here bragging about how willing you are to kill your fellow man, how you spot on the backs of people from a quarter a mile away, how you would shed no tears if someone assassinated "the Kenyan" and things like this.     @jessejaymes what I find amusing, and I posted this on another thread today, is when talk turns to gun control legislation, the right is all up in arms(pun intended) foaming at the mouth claiming their 2nd Amendment rights are being infringed upon, but yet the same ppl support trampling ones Constitutional right to vote through numerous attempts by the GOP to pass voter suppression laws.
    I find it conveniently hypocritical.

    I believe what was intended was that on election day a majority of the people of Colorado intedended that they be represented in their government. They then voted in such a way as to get as many people who would support their ideas as possible into seats of power in the state government. Then the majority of the people intended something be done about gun control. These same elected officials then passed a bill in their state legislature that reflected the majority of the states opinion on the matter. At which point a vocal minority brought up a real concern about their rights being disenfranchised. I then read about the majorities attempts to reach a compromise and ammend the bill so as to protect the very real concerns of the minority while still upholding the will of the majority and addressing the very real issue of gun violence. I believe this is called democracy, although I might have that wrong. Did you read something else?

    Yep! They want to ban all firearms, one type at a time.

    On a side note, The #1 hunting gun is becoming the AR-15 style of rifle, as they are easily adaptable for hunting, with the newer ones being able to switch calibers easily, and are the best self-defense weapons to date, which of course is why it's popular with police and citizens alike, making it the perfect all-round gun.

    Time for another update on how many people have died in the US since the Newtown gun massacre. The numbers keep getting bigger and bigger and the bodies keep piling up. How many have to die before we get sensible gun safety regulations?

    Any of you gun lovers want to sift through all the data and see how many of these 2,453+ deaths were good guy shooting bad guy killings? A bet there are a few but far less than just tragic shootings.

    Not included on this list was this accidental shooting of a TX school employee receiving district sponsored training. Looks like the score is good guy accidentally shot - 1 bad guys stopped - 0 at least for that school district.

    By the way here's another little bit of good news. NRA D-Bag and crap-in-his-pants-to- avoid-the-draft right wing patriot Ted Nugent just had his gun nut program on the Discovery Channel canceled. I guess all of those calls and letters worked.

    Better yet - we are obliged to force our 'public-servants' to fully comply with the constitutional ban on infringement - which includes ALL (misnamed) "gun-control" laws - all the way back to 1939. After all, it's not likely that even one of those civilian-disarmament laws ever succeeded in keeping any gun out of any criminal's hands. So it's time to dispense with them - especially since they violate the 2nd amendment.

    There is no reason to ban shotguns because they "can be modified". Making it illegal to modify the guns would achieve the same result without being so punitive, in the same way as the law against modifying semiautomatic rifles to fully automatic does.

    Not only is there "no reason to ban shotguns", there is no reason to ban ANY gun - for two simple reasons: 1) Because criminals simply ignore the ban anyway (thus invalidating the alleged pretext for the ban); and 2) The supreme-law-of-the-land bans the government from even so much as infringing upon the people's inalienable right to keep and bear arms.

Provide links to stories about American criminals using RPGs during the commission of a crime, please.(2) There is no provision entitled the "supreme-law-of-the-land ". It is an invention by certain people who are unelected, un appointed, and unqualified to make statements about American law who wish to appear to have an unassailable opinion on matters. The government of the United States provides a Congress to create laws, an executive branch to pass or veto them, and a court system to judge based on them and to decide whether any law is constitutional. That is the law of the land. Your statements are not. Hold your breath until you turn blue of you don't like it.
