One of the escorts who claimed Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) had paid her for sex has revealed that she was paid to invent the story, according the Washington Post, which has seen affidavits sworn by the woman.
Last November 1, conservative site the Daily Caller published video of two women claiming that Menendez had paid them for sex in the Dominican Republic.
She testified that a lawyer approached her as offered her money to frame Menendez and his friend and campaign donor, Salomon Melgen. The lawyer gave her a script and paid her to read from it, according to court documents.
At the time, the video seemed to confirm allegations made by an anonymous tipster who sent emails to the FBI claiming that Menendez had sex with underage prostitutes. The FBI have found no evidence of this, according to WaPo.
The Daily Caller's editor Tucker Carlson hasn't responded to requests for comment, but the Caller has published its own article debunking the Post, tastefully headlined "Hooker Headache." The Caller identifies various discrepancies in the Post's account, including the fact that the name of the escort in the Post expose doesn't match either of those given in their videotape.
Meanwhile, the supposed prostitution scandal has distracted the public from what may be a real, though lesser scandal concerning Menendez's campaign donation arrangements with Melgen.
