Our environment is already dangerously compromised and it doesn't take a scientist to figure that out. Americans drive immense gas guzzling trucks and SUV's as daily commuters just so they can say look at me, we are a greedy society with little regard for our environment or others. Unfortunately people have to be forced to take care of the environment and they do poor job at best. Recycling shouldn't be a choice it should be second nature and a law. I lived over in Germany for a while and was amazed by the amount of recycling that goes on, even in the fast food restaurants they separate the different types of garbage into color coded containers so even us Americans c...

It not so much "too much power" - as it is too much obstruction. They have bloated to a considerable budget (aka cost). And, they don't seem to "do" much of anything. Long on regulations. Extensive resources to pester. Not much in the way of participatory accomplishments. They are like a grossly overpaid referee. Experts on how others do stuff wrong, clueless on how to do it right, - and, flat out refuses to redirect their considerable resources on how to reduce their clueless-ness. The perfect government bureaucracy. Way - Too - Much Agency.. Not enough protection.

Human beings need clean air and clean water to survive, so the EPA should have even more power than they do now, to protect the planet for future generations. However, our EPA seems to be focused on creating lots of red tape & enforcing the least important regulations. If the EPA was doing what it's supposed to do, then yes, they should have more power. If they continue to ignore the big problems and create myriad administrative-only problems, then they should be abolished.

The EPA has long ago become a bureaucratic nightmare that is legislating by fiat and constantly exceeds its authority. It drives up the cost of energy & limits production of new energy sources that would lower the energy costs for all Americans. If Obama is successful in implementing 'climate change' rules for business without congressional mandate (where the laws are supposed to originate), then he will suceed in his efforts to destroy energy production in the USA. We don't do enough to protect the natural environment let alone strip the agency assigned with the task of protecting it. This is a battle between industry and environmental concerns. Industry wants to reduce costs by removing and preventing regulation and restrictions on their polluting ways. We should be guided by science as we move into the future. The EPA is guided by science and long term thinking. Industry is guided by the profit motive and the next quarterly returns.

The same people who rail against the EPA would be the first in line to sue the government if they or their family members got cancer from a contaminated water supply, etc. The fact that we have an agency with a vested interest in maintaining clean air and water, among other things, benefits us all greatly, and it's something many people take for granted.

Having been a landfill manager and also as a private landowner I've seen regulations that defy any logic. I'm even picky about how the environment gets treated and I still cannot believe the uncontrolled decisions and regulations from the EPA. What started out as a good idea has become an uncontrolled monster in this country. The EPA has gone beyond the need for oversight. It needs dismantled and restructured. The EPA has done a lot of good, but the bad has really started outweighing that. And it answers to no one except itself. That was a HUGE error right there.
