Louisiana State Senator Elbert Guillory was a Democrat until a few weeks ago, when he left the party and joined the GOP. He's now released a video explaining what pushed him over the edge.
The video paints the Democrats as the party who are hostile to black people, and Republicans as the best party for African Americans.
"Somehow it has been forgotten that the Republican party was founded in 1854 as an abolitionist movement," Guillory says in the video. "The Democrats, on the other hand, were the party of Jim Crow."
Guillory previously sided with LA Republicans by supporting creationism in schools. He told other lawmakers that he had reservations about repealing the act allowing creationism in science class after a faith healer correctly diagnosed his medical ailment. Guillory "said he thought repealing the act could 'lock the door on being able to view ideas from many places, concepts from many cultures,'" the Times-Picayune reported.
"If I closed my mind when I saw this man - in the dust, throwing some bones on the ground, semi-clothed - if I had closed him off and just said, 'That's not science. I'm not going to see this doctor,' I would have shut off a very good experience for myself," Guillory explained.
