u Fri Gatnos v Absolutely The food stamp program began when the government decided to stop subsidizing farmers. Well, guess what, we are still subsidizing farmers and food stamps are traded like currency and people use food stamps to buy top shelf food items and then turn around and use their cash for booze and tobacco. Just another well-meaning, but poorly thought out and poorly executed federal program. Post

May 15 PayThatCEO v Are you kidding? The U.S. is providing hundreds of millions of dollars of foreign aid to some of the world's richest countries - while at the same time borrowing billions back, according to report seen by Congress. The Congressional Research Service released the report last month which shows that in 2010 the U.S. handed out a total of $1.4bn to 16 foreign countries that held at least $10bn in Treasury securities. Four countries in the world's top 10 richest received foreign aid last year with China receiving $27.2m, India $126.6m, Brazil $25m, and Russia $71.5m. Mexico also received $316.7m and Egypt $255.7m. And yet despite the massive outgoings in foreign aid, the receiving count... Post

May 11 Prime_Meridian v Are you kidding? This suggestion reminds me of an old European folk tale about a stupid family wanting to same money by feeding their parrot table scraps rather than the type of food it had gotten used to. I think English and Americans call it "Penny-wise, pound foolish". Post
May 11 Big_bo v Absolutely I think it is time to reduce the food stamp program because it will help reduce government spending. Once the idea that these people on food stamps realize that they're not getting as much as they use to, they're going to have to take drastic measure like budgeting or working extra hours to support their country. Heck it might motivate them to get off their butts and get a better education so that they can get a better job to support their families. Who knows, maybe the price of food might go down which would benefit us all. Also put some restrictions on what they can buy and not be allowed to return the items that they purchased with the food stamps. Post

u May 10 Big_jeff v Are you kidding? Unfortunately we have let this go on for too long. Cut back welfare? We'll have an army of uneducated, ignorant, useless, lazy, Obama-voters who wouldn't be able to figure out how to wipe their ass without govt assistance. What do we do with all of them then? We can't kill them all. We can't just ship them off to another planet. We did it to ourselves. r1 reply Post
May 7 ZombieMedic v Absolutely Way too many people abuse this program! There are charities that can provide for truly needy people, or better yet, people can work for food! Make community service a requirement for food stamps! Post
u May 6 CaryNickel v Absolutely I voted to reduce the program, but that does not mean we shouldn't help those in need. Everyone citizen in the United States should have food on the table before we spend one dime on foreign aid. Reducing the food stamp program doesn't mean people won't be able to eat. But do they have to eat steak? Expensive frozen, prepared foods? Ice cream, pastries, donuts? No. Change the criteria for the program so that people who utilize it must get the most value for the taxpayer's dollar. Post

May 5 NoAmnestyEVER v Absolutely For those of you who haven't seen what food stamp recipients do with their bounty, allow me to give you a first hand account that I've seen on the streets dozens of times. They SELL their food stamps at a discounted rate so that they can buy booze, drugs and cigarettes, all of the things that they're unable to purchase with food stamps. r2 replies Post
u May 3 fraps v Absolutely I am not sure the food stamp program should even exist. But, it is does the food stamps cost should be put in a long term interest bearing account that would be eventually be paid off by the individual or the individual's estate. Food stamp recipients should also be subject to drug tests so long as drug use is illegal, and to community service where after tax minimum wage would be credited back to the food stamp program. Food stamps and all governmental subsidies should be counted as income for the recipients. Post

May 3 bsking v Are you kidding? should we reduce the food stamp program to rein in government spending? May 1 jeffreyknee v Absolutely Yes but it's NOTHING compared to Medicaid and Medicare. How to downsize Washington without harming one citizen. Keep in mind medical industry subsidies are 300x oil industry subsidies ($1.2 trillion vs. $4 billion): 1). Scrap all poverty-based entitlements, and cut taxes 50%; 2). Put the judicial branch and IRS in charge of mitigating neediness using family courts, penalty fines and surtaxes on the relatives (not the public); 3). Abolish Medicaid, state lotteries and Indian casinos -- then renew funding for higher education and cut tuitions 75% (see 7 below for more); 4). Keep Social Security for retirement only (scrap disability and widowhood perks, see above); ... Post

Cut the salaries of all politicians. Make them live on less then 40,000 for a family of 4. Apr '12 that1chick v Are you kidding? Not everyone on foods stamps are dead beats pushing out babies to get more from the government. Make stricker regulations and reviews, ok. Some people are hard working people that lost their decent paying jobs because of the economy going to crap and their families can barely pay high rents and need these benefits to feed their families. Do drug testing like other states and that should take care of some, check to see who is driving a BMW and not a rusty old truck, that would take care of some! May '12 MarkJM v Absolutely You have the right to life, liberty, and the PURSUIT of happiness, not other people's happiness. Along with foreign aid, this has got to be one of the most wasteful programs currently in our nation. I'm not saying to end it, but it needs to be reigned in on. Too many welfare leeches abusing the system, and there are plenty of examples to go off of (the MI lottery winner, the many many accounts of buying alcohol and tobacco, lobster and electronics in a Maine Walmart, etc. etc. etc.). Time for these deadbeats to get off their behinds and start working again. B1 r5 replies e6 endorsed Post
