The food stamp program began when the government decided to stop subsidizing farmers. Well, guess what, we are still subsidizing farmers and food stamps are traded like currency and people use food stamps to buy top shelf food items and then turn around and use their cash for booze and tobacco. Just another well-meaning, but poorly thought out and poorly executed federal program.

This suggestion reminds me of an old European folk tale about a stupid family wanting to same money by feeding their parrot table scraps rather than the type of food it had gotten used to. I think English and Americans call it "Penny-wise, pound foolish".

I think it is time to reduce the food stamp program because it will help reduce government spending. Once the idea that these people on food stamps realize that they're not getting as much as they use to, they're going to have to take drastic measure like budgeting or working extra hours to support their country. Heck it might motivate them to get off their butts and get a better education so that they can get a better job to support their families. Who knows, maybe the price of food might go down which would benefit us all. Also put some restrictions on what they can buy and not be allowed to return the items that they purchased with the food stamps.

We'll have an army of uneducated, ignorant, useless, lazy, Obama-voters who wouldn't be able to figure out how to wipe their ass without govt assistance. What do we do with all of them then? I voted to reduce the program, but that does not mean we shouldn't help those in need. Everyone citizen in the United States should have food on the table before we spend one dime on foreign aid. Reducing the food stamp program doesn't mean people won't be able to eat. But do they have to eat steak? Expensive frozen, prepared foods? Ice cream, pastries, donuts? No. Change the criteria for the program so that people who utilize it must get the most value for the taxpayer's dollar.

Make them live on less then 40,000 for a family of 4. Not everyone on foods stamps are dead beats pushing out babies to get more from the government. Make stricker regulations and reviews, ok. Some people are hard working people that lost their decent paying jobs because of the economy going to crap and their families can barely pay high rents and need these benefits to feed their families. Do drug testing like other states and that should take care of some, check to see who is driving a BMW and not a rusty old truck, that would take care of some! Some people are raised to see food stamps as a discrace and then as adults they have to swallow their pride and ask for help because they cant feed their families on just food p...

You have the right to life, liberty, and the PURSUIT of happiness, not other people's happiness. Along with foreign aid, this has got to be one of the most wasteful programs currently in our nation. I'm not saying to end it, but it needs to be reigned in on. Too many welfare leeches abusing the system, and there are plenty of examples to go off of (the MI lottery winner, the many many accounts of buying alcohol and tobacco, lobster and electronics in a Maine Walmart, etc. etc. etc.). Time for these deadbeats to get off their behinds and start working again.
