No, your injuries from participating in a riot won't be covered by the campus health plan, University of California Berkeley students were shocked to discover.
Oops, turns out the riot rule was mistakenly included when the school signed a contract this summer with new health insurance carrier Aetna, university officials said.
"It's sad that the (clause) was included," said Kim LaPean, University Health Services communications manager, the Daily Californian, the campus newspaper, reported. "But what would be sadder is if students thought we wanted to include the misinformation.
Aetna will correct the plan, but apparently riot exclusions are "standard" in health care policies, Aetna public relations manager Cynthia Michener told the paper.
The mistake provoked outrage on campus because sometimes demonstrations turn into a riot through no fault of many participants. Political demonstrations are woven into the DNA of the Berkeley campus, the site of many protests since the 1960s.
