As I was flying from New York to Los Angeles Thursday night I was watching - what else - news. I admit it, I'm a bit of a news junkie; I love my job. I saw Donald Trump giving his opinion of Vladimir Putin's New York Times op-ed, which denigrated the notion of "American exceptionalism".
As an American, I was disgusted. Trump said he read Putin's opinion piece "over and over," and seemed to agree with the Russian president's opinion that the perpetrators of chemical weapons use in Syria were not the military of strongman Bashar al-Assad, but rebels fighting to oust him from power.
There are also Republicans that have said they were offended, sickened, etc. by Vladimir's comments. Some Democrats, too, expressed disgust. Including Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Robert Menendez (N.J.), who said he felt like "throwing up."
I kind of felt like Menendez - but over Donald Trump's comments. Isn't this the same man who questioned President Barack Obama's birth as a true American citizen? And now, rather than defend his country, his president and the office of the presidency, Trump agrees with a former KGB egomaniac. Remember that Putin has shot tigers for fun. And he just happened to have cameras crew nearby. Hmm...
Just weeks ago Putin claimed there were no chemical weapons in Syria. Now he clearly wants to look bigger and better than President Obama. When someone like Putin makes such remarks, it is unpatriotic to agree with him. It is, dare I say, un-American.
So Mr. Trump, take one of your fancy jets and one of your current or former wives to Russia. You would fit in much better there. Oh, and I'll gladly pay your air fare. But you'll have to fly coach.
If you're not for us, you're against us. Donald Trump is against us.
