And one protestor carried a confederate flag, which has provoked a harsh reaction from the left. Liberal blogger John Aravosis writes, "The Palin-Cruz Tea Partyers are allied with southern confederate flag-waving racists." Some conservatives were also critical - including David Frum:
Pro tip: If you want to express your love of US Army & its monuments ... leave the Confederate flag at home. pic.twitter.com/dyByu9av51
Conservative former Romney aide Richard Grennell is fighting back. He's currently engaged in a one-man Twitter war with MSNBC hosts and Harry Reid staffers who condemned the flag's appearance at the protests:
The south? The welfare state that whines about makers and takers while they take more than any other part of the country? They lost. They'd lose again. Not only did they lose, they got it handed to them. Now spin me a yarn about how the civil war was some noble quest about states rights vs federal rights and not a rich man's war where a bunch of plantation owners were afraid of losing a few dollars by having to pay workers instead of owning slaves. A war fought by and large by the poor men in those states who benefited from the outcome win or lose in no fashion at all.
It was O.K.,there was no law against slavery and they had the Right to not only have them, they had the Right to secede as well. The civil war was actually an illegal war by the Federal government as most wars are illegal..
@Jayden are you defending the Slavery? because it wasn't even a legal issue, the people of the north abolished it because it was wrong to them morally. as enslaving humans based on their ethnic origins tends to be. And states rights do not include a right to secede, and if you renounce you country and then take up arms against that country that makes you a traitor.
It's not losing the war we are pissed about. It's the rape, pillaging and economic reign of terror of reconstruction that we hold a grudge about. That's a part of history you don't like talking about. And to address the slavery thing. If the war was to free slaves, why did it take 100 years after the war to get a civil rights bill passed?
It appears there was only ONE guy with a confederate flag there. But, I'm aware that you'd rather there been a whole lot more so itd be easier to deem them illegitimate racists. And, of course, that one guy is all the liberal bias propaganda spewing media is going to take pictures of. They want all of these people wearing confederate flag t-shirts.
please, it's neither of those things. it's the flag of a bunch of treasonous rich white land owners who found gullible dupes into fighting a war so they could continue not to pay them and own slaves instead. you're a rube to believe otherwise.
Once again, the phony 'Pravda' media is making an issue and a distraction from the main reason why veteran groups are protesting. Trying to give cover to their beloved ersatz messiah over of the "Stars & Bars" flag being displayed at the capital, instead of the real reasons. Put simply, Veterans and Veteran groups are challenging this wannabe despot for HIS illicit action against our veterans and Americans in general---
"The Million Vet March has already won before even setting foot on Capitol grounds. They’ve called out Obama leaving him no place to run:“In a mean-spirited fit of selfish anger, Barack Obama has shut down our nation’s war memorials. And he has declared open war on our honored veterans!” Million Vet March states on its homepage in calling all patriots to come and help to “circle the wagons”.(Quoted in part from the following link)
This is a question rather than a complaint. Why is it that the option to 'vote up' on the above entry is non-existent?? This has happened on other entries of mine of late. Was this an omission of error, or???
Slavery was not a main factor in the Civil War. No matter what liberals want to try and say. It was about states' rights. Just because that right at the time was slavery does not make it the focal point. Laws were passed that went against the Southern Economy.
Don't give me that liberal crap. Yes, slavery was a issue. Not THE issue. This is a quote that was addressed to the People of South Carolina : "Their representation in Congress is useless to protect them against unjust taxation; and they are taxed by the people of the North for their benefit, exactly as the people of Great Britain taxed our ancestors in the British Parliament for their benefit. For the last forty years, the taxes laid by the Congress of the United States, have been laid with a view of subserving the interests of the North."
Depending on the issue being protested, it may be counter productive... however I don't believe it's offensive. As with any symbol, you need to understand what it means to the people using it. In this case it is most likely a symbol of state rights over federal rights. I doubt very seriously that it's meant to justify or advocate a return to slavery.
I cant believe this is the picture & headline they use for this story. What a fine example of liberal bias. This was a rally suppotted & attended by veterans, truckers & teaparty. They took down the barricades in front of the memorials & piled them in front of the WH. They didnt start fires, or tip over cars, or break windows, they respectfully declined to be kept out of the people's memorials. They didnt rape anyone or urinate in public. But watch the liberal media spin and search for something negative to paint their picture.
Personally offensive or not.....progressive liberals need to grow up.....
The things they support and put into our faces are far more offensive: murdering unborn children, same-sex marriage, transgender/unisex bathrooms, zero tolerance gun control, political correctness gone awry......racism.....
@Mia You can expect the media to come at any story from the angle that will sell the most news. Doesn't matter who is protesting the media exists to maintain the status quo. They may occasionally fake sympathy with a movement from time to time, but in the end they will always do their best to destroy it before builds up enough steam to make a difference.
@Knightkore This liberal has no problem with a woman choosing not to carry a mass of cells before it becomes a fetus, and is against abortions after the first trimester, not because their killing a child (a fetus is not a child, although it is at that point more than just a cluster of cells.) Same sex marriage hurts no one, having separate bathrooms for separate genders is a bit silly, zero tolerance gun control is driven by authoritarians not liberals... I can't help it that a lot of authoritarians are also liberal in other areas. As for political correctness, isn't that just being polite and treating people with the respect you would like?
@MarkColwell Thats not true. It sounds good & rational but the problem is, it is false. The media worked tirelessly to promote OWS. It does the same for other liberal movements, pro-choice, gun control, obamacare, etc... Thus same, so called mainstream media has done just as much work trying to tear down & misrepresent the teaparty & it's supporters.
@bsking * correction*... what have you got against vets?
..... I didn't see the outrage when Obama plastered his picture over the bed of stars ... the same idiots who fake being outraged over the American Confederate flag didn't say boo over Obama's desecration of the United States flag.
@YouSickenMe Being retired Army and a veteran myself, I appreciate their service and the sacrifices they have made for this great country. It was still a just a Tea Party political event with a couple thousand supporters a few hundred of whom happened to be Veterans. Only slightly less underwhelming than the Tea Party Trucker protest the previous day.
No but it is correctly linked to slave ownership and commonly used by organizations that are racist. I wish you would get it (and others like you) that you complain too much about those complaining about the flag and not those that use them.
@BostonRob what it represents is the attitude of FU and everything from Washington. They don't give a damn what anyone thinks. It honestly isn't about racism. I'm explaining it not saying FU personally.
It would be nice if mary would post an article about hillary clinton, proud self proclaimed, progressive who will run in 2016 & the organizations who support her & the dem party& why no one denounces them & the media covers for them. Here is an artiicle: Joe NewbySpokane Conservative Examiner September 29, 2010 The Communist Party USA, along with a collection of more than 400 other left wing organizations are set to converge on the nations capitol this weekend for a rally called "One Nation Working Together".
The rally is also supported by President Obama's own political group, Organizing for America, according to Jordy Yager of the Hill's Blog Briefing Room. Organizing for America recently sent out an email calling the rally,“the biggest progressive demonstration in decades.”
Other groups involved with the rally include Planned Parenthood, the NAACP, the Democratic Socialists of America, Code Pink, SEIU, La Raza and an assortment of unions who typically work to promote the Democratic Party agenda.
SEIU and La Raza are also behind Washington's Initiative 1098, the measure that would impose an income tax, supposedly only on the "rich".
In 2008, the Communist Party USA saw Obama's candidacy as a way to advance their agenda. In a 2008 editorial, the CPUSA wrote, "A broad multiclass, multiracial movement is converging around Obama’s “Hope, change and unity” campaign because they see in it the thrilling opportunity to end 30 years of ultra-right rule and move our nation forward with a broadly progressive agenda."
According to the One Nation Working Together website, the rally is intended to bring together various left wing organizations "and individuals who are committed to pulling our country back together now."
That would be an interesting exercise, since many of these groups are dedicated to dividing the nation along racial and class lines.
Exactly! This is Obamas media liberal circle. One guy gets all the attention, but every day somewhere on American soil some outsider is protesting burning our national flag, but the liberals are OK with this. It's only a matter of time before Jessie and Al have them spewing racial remarks with Obama backing them up.
@Slowmo True, but it is still a distraction story. There were many flags, many hats, many different shoes, people, religions, skin colors, ethnicities, etc, and focusing on just one is wrong. Celebrate the diversity of the vets, instead of picking on just one and taking away from the message of all the others.
the significance is that was the flag of half the nation. the truth is they could have been carrying a white flag of surrender and the left would have said it was a white sheet of racism... blah blah blah same old leftist bullsh#t ...
Oh it's not that they're stupid..it's that they have an agenda and will twist perceptions to fit their own narrative..even if its not true. One guy flies a confederate flag and now the libs try to portray the whole group as flag flying racists in an attempt to undermine the protesters true intentions and message. I think it says a LOT about someone if they count something a victory when they've had to lie and cheat to get it.
Its really sad when people are oblivious to our own history. The Confederate flag doent represent racisim. It signifies the freedoms and liberties that all states not just the south should have and know they have without the strangle hold of big government. That forced government procedures are wrong. Standing up for your rights, your freedoms, or your way of life is never wrong.
Yes, the state should not be raping women with transvaginal ultrasounds. I agree with you there. Government should not be raping pregnant women and then charging the woman for medically unnecessary gov procedure. You are on your own with slave appreciation.
If you need a flag to represent freedom and liberty, there is NO SUBSTITUTE for Old Glory. The fact that you think the "southern swastika" represents your philosophies better than the flag of the USA says a lot about you.
@Center slave appreciation? No not at all. In fact i find slavery to be repulsive and not once did i say that i approved. Yes slavery did happen and yes the issue of slavery was a major point of the civil war. Theres no denying that. Im just saying that Nations dont split and governments dont go after 1.4%.(1.4% of whites americans owned slaves at slavery's peak) im stating that there were more meanings associated with the flag than just slavery.
