@PauldenZangpo I don't think they overestimated their numbers, so much as they bit off more than they could chew.
Granted, the ruthless gerrymandering will result in numerous Tea Party wins in both '14 and '16, but I agree with @armed_liberal. They're going to need at least a decade to get back onto the track they were on pre-shutdown. While they'll keep their gun-toting, homophobic, racist and generally socially backwards base voters, they're going to lose quite a bit to more mainstream Republicans.
That being said, I suspect the Democrats will gain in the House next year (though maybe by a very small margin). Going to be a bit of a shuffle, so to speak. A few less total Republicans, fewer TPs, and more middle-of-the-road Democrats. Unfortunately, the true left was left gutted post-Clinton, so I don't see that returning for at least a decade as well.
@CanadianIndy I think all the pundits will be shocked in '14. Gerrymandering may very well turn out to be grossly overrated. The American electorate does not live and breathe TeaPub hate. National elections it will be GOP who are they???
Budget control act is still in play and gov spending has gone down 2 years in a row. The deficit in 2010 was 1.35T and we closed FY2013 at $642 B. Cutting deficit in half in 3 years is a huge deal. Obama's budget was center to Senate leaning left to House leaning hard right. Obama proposed major entitlement reform with chained CPI which liberals hate and in return, some loopholes will raise revenue. I don't support raising taxes and think the 25% of high profit corporations paying zero in taxes need to stop. Democrats must do entitlement reform and Republicans need to do tax reform. I would be pleased with one year budget even at sequester level that keeps the cuts but makes them smart. I don't want to live through the hellish possibility of hostage taking. Eventually, there will be a Republican President and if debt ceiling became a weapon to overturn elections, there will be demands by a minority that could be reversed. Extreme democrats could demand cap and trade, tax increases, raise social security by 50% The debt ceiling is a misnomer. Presidents can't spend money unilaterally and not paying for what was borrowed is not a concession. I really hope that budget conference by 12/13 will be a real negotiation..Paul Ryan needs to be replaced with someone less extreme, but will fight for Republican spending cuts and spending priorities. Ryan has fake credentials as he was part of initial gov spending explosion. Voting for two tax cuts not offset, 2 unfunded wars and deciding vote for part d which was a huge unfunded entitlement. I miss my Republican moderate party and want them back.
Ace, well that is an interesting view. Although I am an independent, I find myself becoming more upset with the spending habits of the left. What is their fiscal goal. The printing presses in the basement of the Treasury are about to burn out from overtime use. The dollar is sinking, some believe the US dollar may soon lose out as the leading trade currency in the world, we could pay one hundred million dollars a day 365 days a year and it would take over 200 years to pay off the current national debt, and now it is going up, we now have a government run healthcare program that the laws writers admit we cannot afford and they and that they designed to fail so they could have what they really wanted, one level health care, How in the world are we going to go on without bankruptcy.
I was really hoping the two parties in power would come out saying we found an agreeable settlement that will let us continue on with some fiscal restraint and a way to begin paying down the national debt. Instead we hear crowing and whooping about we won and surrender and we will bury them. Very patriotic and American of the Democrats. I think most of the nation, me included, are thinking "now what," do the Democrats think this is a green light for continued reckless spending?
It better not. But if it does, every moderate Republican and every liberal Democrat is in the red zone for their job.....2014 they'll get voted out.....Tea Party people will sweep all the seats.....and take more in the Senate.....
There is very little functional about any "psuedo business" entity that borrows money it will never have each month to make up for it's predictable short fall on the interest payment alone of which it can never repay, much less ever address the principal, of which not even money will ever exist to pay it unless your dollar is made to be worth mere fractions of penny fractions and a loaf of bread costs thousands of those dollars.
And if such an entity did exist, laid off workers really wouldn't be on a de facto paid vacation, they'd be looking for jobs like anyone else or applying for unemployment.
How about fully-operational? With no connotations about its relative efficiency? I just didn't want to open up the federal government to comparisons with the Death Star.
See, because if I did that, next thing you know people on Politix are describing Barack Obama as Emperor Palpatine telling Ted Cruz as Luke Skywalker to "Witness the power of this fully armed and operational battle station!"
I was hoping not to invite that kind of comparison. And you know somebody here would do it. They'd get a bunch of vote ups and then everybody would be talking about how Emperor Obama wants to destroy the universe and enslave its population. And the only thing that can stop him is a determined band of "rebels" on the side of truth, justice and freedom.
You can see why I'd want to avoid that, right? So instead of choosing the best word to describe my meaning, I selected instead "functional," which is a correlated word to "operational" but not the same.
@NormalFlora I'm not opposed one bit to cutting out loopholes and blatant means which exist that favor the wealthy who have indeed bought our long since corrupted government which should never have allowed money to be mixed with politics/governance.... however, government should never be the nations largest employer and anyone that thinks otherwise has screws loose and many missing.
The long and short is that the people have allowed graft and bribery to become accepted for far too many years despite choosing to remain completely ignorant that our original form of governance ceased existing before the end of the 1800's.
What we have no is the result of multiple bankruptcies and anyone that cannot see our congress do not represent us, but are in fact elected trustees accountable only to the note holders....... is quite daft and mind boggling so.
Because we all know republicans are never wrong and always win. Therefore for one to acknowledge they have done either they are suddenly a RINO. It they ever attempt to compromise or waiver from some little party playbook then they are a RINO. All republicans are RINO's. Because their actions and their words are always at odds with themselves. Starting from the first step with the myth of fiscal conservatism and responsible spending all the way through to being the morale majority.
@TheKangaroo Nobody really "won." It's a matter of perception. The 350,000 plus furloughed gov't workers (those who actually earn a paycheck) didn't win. Tourists and veterans going to visit museums and monuments didn't win. Hell, even CONgress, one side or the other didn't win, they merely played chicken little again and kicked the can down the road as they always have. It won't be a "win" until all these assholes get together, do their actual job, and pass a balanced budget (not this mickey mouse continuing resolution crap they have been pulling). Over 5 years without a budget now, our Founding Fathers are rolling in their graves....
All this cost, all this pain and suffering, and what did you all get.....you drove your own party's numbers into the toilet, improved president Obama's numbers and even made the ACA more popular.....you couldn't have helped democrats more if you had tried.....Cruz and the tea party failed miserably. No matter how you look it you have to draw that conclusion.
And good job President Obama, you did the right thing by not negotiating with a gun to your head....that would have set a terrible precedent for the country.
If it doesn't change its' ideology, its' expression of resentment, and its' putting nutjobs like Michelle Bachmann, Ted Cruz, Steve King, and Louie Gohmert as public spokespeople it won't rise very far
Anyone in America that doesn't think the government needs to be drastically downsized and operate with 100% transparency and the highest level of accountability.... along with WELL WITHIN IT'S MEANS that is actually provided willfully by sufficiently represented peoples... is brainwashed.
Neither side gives even a color of either absolute requirement to the people, anyone able to critically free think can surely understand that.
Do you actually think anyone in government represents YOU, is accountable to you or makes you privy to what they are up to since you in ideal theory are their boss?
"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government can not pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that "the buck stops here." Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better." - Barack Obama - 16 March 2006
The MSM media did it's job! They scared them into surrender. I'm not shocked, but I'm very disappointed. For those that care, start prepping for America's bankruptcy because it is coming! Check out 5 Things That Will Happen To You When America Goes Bankrupt http://townhall.com/columnists/johnhawkins/20...
CLASSIC! When things don't go your way simply blame MSM. I find this to be incredibly ironic from the party that espouses personal responsibility. But then again you guys think you're 'fiscally conservative' too while balooning the debt in the first place.
@AceLuby coming from person who wants to justify the hypocrisy of the left on the debt ceiling because the economic numbers are different. As I have said before the "faux news", "illegal war", "hate", etc... crowd have no value. They are in the same boat as people who still talk about whether the obama is a muslim or not even a citizen, let's stick to the topic and issues when discussing the govt, elected officials, and appointed/civilian members of said govt.
@Vance1 Nothing! The idea is to inflate the debt away. Our monetary supply has not been based upon real value for a very long time. Is it cheating? Of course it is. We do this as standard operating procedure as it is, only slowly. Due to inflation, it becomes more and more easy to find the money to pay off a 30 year home mortgage as the years pass by.
I am voting yes because there is no maybe or depends. It would depend on the provisions of the agreement. The stalemate certainly needs to end. If the ceiling is raised, what does the nation get out of this other than the Democratic lock down of the government is over? This has certainly been interesting and it shows that both sides have acted rather childishly. It is time to refresh the members of the House and Senate. It may be time for new political parties to replace these two stuck in the mud organizations who are only interested in the power they can garner rather than the interests of the nation.
