Romney is all about the economy, and yesterday he got a little impatient when a reporter persisted in asking him about fiery-hot social issues. The Colorado reporter asked him about gay marriage, civil unions, tuition for illegal immigrants, and marijuana. The marijuana question was a bridge too far for Romney...
Instead of answering, he asked incredulously,
Aren't there issues of significance you'd rather talk about? The economy, the growth of jobs, the need to put people back to work, the challenges of Iran. There are enormous issues we face, and you want to talk about marijuana?
Before Romney lost his cool, he'd fielded two questions on same-sex marriage, and looked a little weary as he reaffirmed his previously-stated position: "marriage is a relationship between a man and a woman...If a civil union is identical to marriage, I don't support that." Later, he says gay marriage is a state issue - though he supports the federal marriage amendment.
Romney's "all economy, all the time" stance has a lot of supporters. But there are other Republicans who don't think social issues are irrelevant at all, and are saying "bring it on" to the culture wars over gay marriage. For instance, the National Organization for Marriage released a statement saying that "President Obama has now made the definition of marriage a defining issue in the presidential contest...We intend to win the marriage debate this November."
