pShould the US move toward a flat tax?

I would prefer a sales tax. It gets people more evenly, a rich person will pay more taxes on a yacht than I will on a canoe. Also anyone in the underground economy will get hit everytime they buy something. A flat tax sounds good, but can easily ballon to a flat 40% say, with no refunds.

    That is a reasonable reply. And I would agree to a sales tax as long as a amendment cap was put on it. Otherwise, you're right, it not only would get more from the rich (they do consume more), it would get "illegal;y" earned monies and even foreign vacationing monies (who do use our public services).

    Why would the underground economy get hit? That makes no sense. In fact, the black market would grow substantially for tax free goods. You'd also need at least 18% to cover all federal taxes, probably more, and then you have the effect of people buying things with a 25% tax, you create an incentive to not spend money on non-necessities. Creating incentives to not spend in a consumer based economy is not smart.

You would probably be one of the people who would become unnessacary with a consumption tax, like I.R.S. agents, tax preparers, mid-level beuracrat, etc. You also probably dont understand how the underground economy works. No matter if its drugs, guns, stolen x-box's, it's all cash, therefore no pay stub to leech from like a person who works legally. But they still buy thier cars, boats, motorcycles, tv's, etc., and they will get hit everytime they buy something with thier illegally made money. That will be a big boost of revenue that is unexpected, eliminating the need for a 25% tax. When ALL the revenue is calculated it shouldnt be more than 10-15%. And it is a tax that you CHOOSE to pay. You would take home your GROSS pay not your net, that would in effect be a pay raise allowing you to spend more anyway. Finally, you dont nessacarily need that big screen tv this week, you can save your gross pay quicker and until you are ready to take the hit, THAT YOU CHOOSE TO PAY. It is the FAIREST tax because it gets everybody equally, and this country is all about FAIRNESS these days, isn't it?
