If the new allegations are true that New Jersey Governor Chris Christie knew about the politically motivated lane closures on the George Washington Bridge, he should resign or be impeached, an editorial in the Newark Star Ledger says.
If this charge proves true, then the governor must resign or be impeached. Because that would leave him so drained of credibility that he could not possibly govern effectively. He would owe it to the people of New Jersey to stop the bleeding and quit. And if he should refuse, then the Legislature should open impeachment hearings.
Christie has claimed to have no knowledge that lanes on the bridge were ordered closed in retaliation for a mayor not endorsing him. But a lawyer for David Wildstein, the former Port Authority official, who oversaw the lane closings, said Friday that the governor did know about it at the time.
