She's known for her filibuster against abortion restrictions, but rising Democratic star and candidate for Texas governor Wendy Davis's stance on guns just might surprise you.
Davis, a gun owner, who favors expanding gun rights in Texas, joins her Republican opponent in supporting an "open carry" law that would allow people with concealed handgun permits to have the weapons in full view in public, the Associated Press reports.
This position puts her at odds with her party, but takes it off the table as a wedge issue in the campaign.
"There is little or no public safety justification for open carry," Emmanuel Garcia, a spokesman for the Texas Democratic Party, told AP.
Texas State Rifle Association spokeswoman Alice Tripp called Davis an "opportunist."
"Wendy Davis has a very bad record as far as gun owners go," Tripp said.Via Associated Press
