""It is an indoctrination because it is not objective approach."
    ----------
That is not true. It is science because what they are teaching is an objective viewpoint that takes into account solid evidence. When we teach astronomy, we are not required to teach astrology to "be fair."

Great analogy Zazz! The same can be said for any unsupported scientific hypothesis or discredited ones. We teach the scientific consensus if there is one, not every crackpot idea that someone can cook up.

@Knightkore : But you miss the point of Zazziness's reply, creation was already being debunked 100's of years earlier by Copernicus's new model heliocentric universe that replaced the geocentric universe of the bible. The church attempted to suppress this knowledge with the incarceration of Galileo and execution of Bruno. Yet, somehow the church and believers have managed to survive the first proofs of science that demonstrated that the bible was wrong some 5 centuries ago? So while there may be no studies to prove this, I'm pretty sure that children are not falling away from the church today in greater numbers because they learned about Darwin and evolution. But instead that children today are more sophisticated and knowledgable to no longer believe in 2500 year old fairy tales written by dessert swelling goat herders!

INVOLVING parents..keeping them in the loop of what THEIR children are being taught..this SHOULD happen and on a lot more issues than just this. Parents need to know what the state is indoctrinating their children to... These sentences came out of a common core workbook for children to identify the possessive nouns...

    "The presidents choices affect everyone.

He makes sure the country's laws are fair.

Government official's commands must be obeyed by all.

An individual's wants are less important than the nation's well being."

    This was for 2nd graders.

@Slowmo Science isn't indoctrination, it is the culmination of study and observation resulting in certain theories and confirmed laws. Schools are in the business of disseminating facts, not belief systems.

How is any of that substantially differ from "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country"? And which government official's commands can be ignored at will?

Sorry, but it's not the "Bible thumpers" who replaced phonics with "see-say", math drills with "whole math", history with "social studies", and sports with study hall. The reason our "education system goes right down the crapper more and more every day" is because of the progressive agenda to "dumb down" the curriculum to the lowest common denominator.
  • #308
    !
@CaryNickel Nope. It is all sides that have torpedoed good education. The basics and allowing for different interest and learning level have always been used successfully. It is the constant bickering and finger pointing conflicts that have harmed education.

    @CaryNickel
And George W Bush didn't help with his no kids left behind which REQUIRES 100% graduation, I don't know what you were taught, but you are not going to get 100% period, and because of that you have seen schools dumbing down their curriculum because it's the only way they will ever come close to that. Some people are not meant for academics, they are not hard wired that way, some do better in vocational fields instead, but vocational education has been shunned now in schools in favor of 100% graduation. When I was in school you had both, now very little vocational is offered. You also see a rise in wanting vouchers, this is not really meant for kids in public schools but for parents who have had their kids in private school from day one and have had the money to do it, it's just a pay back for them, because like the Charter school push, these schools get to pick and choose who they will let in, if your kid is not strong in academics, or has discipline issue,he's not getting in to a Charter school or private school, from a public one, the Charter and private are allowed to look at records and decide, public has to accept everyone.

@CaryNickel I would think cutting art, music, and industrial arts has more to do with governments cutting school's budgets than anything else. Cut art and music, but keep football?

@SDBruce - Sorry, you're repeating falsehoods. School budgets haven't been cut, that is just fodder thrown around to finger-point and lay blame on the other guy. School funding always increases, even though it has been proven over and over that throwing money at the problem isn't the solution. Maybe reducing teen and unwed pregnancy would help, though...

For decades, the Left’s prime directive has been to take over the education system in this country to promote positive images of socialism and to laud communist icons such as Karl Marx and Che Guevara as “history heroes”. Unsuspecting parents are sending their children off to public schools, where radical teachers push the Left’s agenda into impressionable minds.

Today you see kids wearing Karl Marx and Che Guevara tee's and their parents arent even smart enough to take them away!!!!!!!!!!

"No matter where you live, if your children go to public schools, the textbooks they use were very possibly written under Texas influence."

I will say this only one time. They are only teaching one side of it for a reason. Because one side of it is science. You want indoctrination? Start taking your kid to church before it can walk and have it baptized. Then tell it for the rest of it's life if it doesn't obey unquestioningly without evidence to support anything you say as truth or fact that they'll suffer an eternity of fire and hell. That's indoctrination by pro's.
One side is science. The other side is a fairy tale about a boogeyman who really loves you so much he'll torment you forever if you don't do what he says like an obedient little slave.

the only reason people are Christian or muslim or Buddhist or w/e else is 99% of the time more about geography than actual belief. you believe what you were taught to believe because of where you were and those around you. it doesn't make Christians any more right than muslims or hindus. they're all hopelessly deluded and without merit.

I've said before that I'm a Christian, but I think this subject should be discussed openly, encompassing all theories and hypothesis, and then let each individual decide for himself what he or she believes or feels is most plausable. Not my place to cram my beliefs down anyone else's throat as much as it's not their place to do it to me, either.

@Jteam Tell me where and when you think the predecessor of man came about, then please tell me who or what directed it to come into being. That is my argument. No one knows what inspired that first cell to come into being. Someone or something must've been "directing traffic" IMHO. I'd say "Intelligent Design" would be a more accurate description of my view on this. Stating one is a Christian simply means they follow the teachings of Christ.

The scientific method does not apply to religious mythology. It is not a valid comparison. Teach religion where is should be taught. Do not try to pretend its science.
  • #28
    !
@Yobyag "Intelligent Design" most certainly is a scientifically supported theory.

"Yes. The scientific method is commonly described as a four-step process involving observations, hypothesis, experiments, and conclusion. Intelligent design begins with the observation that intelligent agents produce complex and specified information (CSI). Design theorists hypothesize that if a natural object was designed, it will contain high levels of CSI. Scientists then perform experimental tests upon natural objects to determine if they contain complex and specified information. One easily testable form of CSI is irreducible complexity, which can be discovered by experimentally reverse-engineering biological structures to see if they require all of their parts to function. When ID researchers find irreducible complexity in biology, they conclude that such structures were designed."

The schools only teach one "side" because there is only one side from an academic perspective. This is science not religion. Learn science objectively and if you choose to reject it thereafter that is your right.

Only those parents who wish their children to grow up to be ignorant and have a limited potential for intelligence want to squash scientific education. Unbelievable that this censorship of knowledge is with us in 2014, this will ultimately be the downfall of this country. This is an embarrassment to America.

Do you have any evidence that morality is not subjective?

Moral relativists do not say it is determined by the individual they say it is determined by society....do you have any evidence that that is not true?

Do you think it is absurd to believe that, simply because you disagree, or do you have any actual evidence to prove that it is absurd to believe that?
  • #73
    !
The problem is that 46% of the country have strong religious beliefs on the subject and oppose evolution outright. Think of the problem from another perspective. Assume 52% believed that evolution was wrong and passed laws forbidding it be taught in schools funded in anyway by the state. Not to comfortable, right?
This is a very rare case where intentional ignorance should win.

@Russell797 The conservatives and others have doubt in many ways justifiable. Al Gore severely oversold the idea. We were not supposed to have ice in the arctic anymore. The temperature was supposed to be quite a bit warmer by now but has not changed significantly and legitimate sources say we are in a cooling phase. My opinion has changed in that I now consider it the same as religious faith. I will wait for definitive proof.

    That's a straw man.

"The temperature was supposed to be quite a bit warmer by now but has not changed significantly"

    We HAVE had significant warming.

"and legitimate sources say we are in a cooling phase."

What legitimate sources are saying that?

The institution of the Church has failed, and now wants the state to do what it could not do, using the same failed methods. Missouri, like so many more, cannot be shown, and never learns that it is better to leave to the church that which is the churches and leave to the state that which is the states.
