A Missouri lawmaker has proposed a bill to require schools to notify parents before "the theory of evolution by natural selection" is taught to give them the opportunity to opt out of the class for their children.
"Our schools basically mandate that we teach one side," GOP state Rep. Rick Brattin, the bill's sponsor, told KCTV. "It is an indoctrination because it is not objective approach."
A science teacher's group said the bill, which may be the first of its kind to call for parental notification before a mainstream science curriculum is taught, would cause high school education in Missouri to be "degraded."
"There simply is no alternative to learning about it; there is no substitute activity," Glenn Branch, deputy director of the National Center for Science Education told Talking Points Memo.Via Talking Points Memo and KCTV 5
