Poor girl. I don't know about everyone else, but if that were me in elementary school I would have felt as if I had done something wrong, and it would have made me feel guilty the rest of the day.
The article didn't say she was making anyone else pray with her. Let the girl pray! I think this whole country needs to take a look at what it's turning into. Everyone claims to be accepting of religion and cultures, but Christianity seems to be excluded from that.
  • #50
    !
The claim appears to be fake. Seems the girl's father is a VP of a publishing company that is publishing a book by a religious right extremist and this case is being promoted by that same religious right extremist.

    !
That always sounds good, until a Satanist child or a Hindu child does it, and then the christians are outraged about their kids being exposed to pagans. Christians aren't excluded from tolerance unless they try to push their religion on others--just like everyone else.
  • #91
    !
Nonesense. NO ONE stops kids from praying in school, and NO, Christianity is NOT excluded from tolerance. That is ridiculous and this story that this happened is not credible.

The opposite, on the other hand, is common, where the radical religious Christian right tries everything they can think of to push their religion on others who don't want it and where it is not appropriate.

We are a secular nation that accepts all religions equally.

@BobFromDist9 Yup, it stinks to high heaven (pardon the pun) of a rigged / fake scandal to benefit a person - apparently the parent - with an axe to grind.

I think these must be extra bad parents, to use their child like this. I'd say shame on them, but they are probably incapable of experiencing shame. Instead they probably think their ends justify the means.

I'm suspicious of this. It looks and sounds like she's been coached. That said, If it turns out to be true, the school is wrong.

That's all I have to say about this.

I have my suspensions also. I would like to think schools have more sense than that. But the Buddhist Louisiana case makes me reevaluate that.
If true they need to be held to the same standard that I say the police need to be held to when they over step their bounds (not the one that they ace actually held to).
Those in authority are obligates to protect the rights of others, not deny them.

@wild_turkey6 In light of the zero tolerance insanity.....I'm not surprised this took place.....

Perhaps it is zero tolerance for prayer?
  • #25
    !
If the kid was coached by anybody, it was probably her father.

Forcing kids to pray in school who are generally not accustomed to praying in school and don't want to is what's the problem, and NOT the other way around.
  • #34
    !
    @mplo Uh.....no.....

And either would be wrong......sorta......read the amendment......it says congress cannot make laws for or against {that would be for atheism or secularism or humanism} free exercise of religion and free speech.....and that neither should be prohibited or abridged in anyway.....

People need to get a thicker skin and grow up.....you might be "offended" by anothers view but that does not give you the freedom to abridge anothers freedom.....this "forcing" goes both ways.....and you use as nearly all progressive liberals in a way that is targetted to abridge and prohibit religious expression and freedom of speech.....antiConstitutional. ....

Are Christian families facing persecution in public schools in your opinion?

Not in my school district. If it's a problem in other districts, the publicly elected school board is whom to address.

How is it known that someone is praying if they don't make a public spectacle of themselves. Just pray if that's what you want to do. Why advertise it?
  • #35
    !
Advertise it? She is a small child merely folding her hands. Now, I am not a christian, by no means. I am an atheist. But i think a person is ENTITLED to what they believe in, and if this baby wants to pray, she has that damn right!
  • #36
    !
Because it's our RIGHT to do so. Why do Hasids advertise what they are by their style of dress ? Do you want to ban that also ? Why do you apparently NOT support the U.S. Constitution and the Rights and Liberties it protects ?

I'm really skeptical that it did take place, but from the story above, it looks like that it will be difficult to prove one way or another.

The little gril is free to pray at school as long as it is not school led and she is not disrupting the class.

But there have been so many claims by Christians that their rights are being trampled that this one just looks like another cry wolf story.

Oh the poor Christians! So persecuted that the Congress is filled with mostly people who claim they are Christians , so persecuted that they are a (diminishing) majority of the population.

They are just worried that they will return to the same persecution that the early Christians suffered during the period Jesus was said to have lived. But it is imaginary, because what secular people want is Christians who practice their own religion and leave others to do so, or not.

If the sentence attributed to her is a direct quote, I would have to say she was coached - few children of that age speak in compound sentences.

Remember, this is a wonderful nation we live in. You are free to believe or not believe as you wish. You may worship or not worship as you please. And, the constitution guarantees that we cannot be told not to worship or that we cannot be forced to worship. You can worship a cow pattie if you wish. Most of us don't care. We may think you are goofy but, the fact is, we just don't care because that is your choice to make if you wish.
My own feelings....a separation of church and state is necessary. But we should never separate our nation from God.

Agree right up to your last sentence, you would then have to ask, which God? I'm guessing it is the exact God that you worship.

Kids look up when they are trying to remember.

Both the mother and the man (father?) coached her,

People look down and to the side when they lie.

    This has very low credibility.

Please reread the story...this was not "lunchroom employee." This was a teacher assigned to lunchroom monitor duty, not someone employed to perform lunchroom work.
  • #303
    !
Kid probably calls all adults in the school "teachers". I'm not sure which way to go on this. I think the cafeteria worker needs to be told that they have no authority over the kids' religious beliefs -- NO MATTER WHICH RELIGION THEY ARE.
  • #349

I work in a school and lunchroom employees and janitorial staff do interact with the children. They even manage to learn their names. Our bookkeeper rarely interacts with the kids, but most everyone else does.

@Gatnos I just literally told you the reason. Her daddy's income depends on promoting a book his publishing company is selling that claims this sort of thing happens all the time. He coached her, to get the story in the news, and then happens to mention the book in every interview.

There has to be more to this story. We need to realize that there is money on the line if certain politicians and corporations can convince us that public schools are rotten and take our tax dollars and pocket it!
  • #6
    !
some schools do focus more on making money than teaching. when schools refuse to remove those who cause problems for others it takes away from those trying to learn.

here the schools have gotten so greedy if your kid misses more than the schools thinks they should you can end up in court and get fined, happened to my son with his kid who just had surgery,i took the dr paper into the office myself and they still tried to fine him, missed a days pay that will never get returned do to there greed.

@tomincali Truancy isn't something that the schools made up. I'd wager that if you looked it up it is a "status offense" on your states legal code. Status offenses are those that only apply to juveniles and not adults. Truancy is the most common.
The school is just following the law and looking out fie the well being of the child.
  • #23
    !
@tomincali That being said, the school is out of line if you had a Drs excuse. Truancy should only apply to "unexcused" absences. At least that is the way it works in my state.

I agree, the girl sounds like she may have been coached. It just doesn't sound like something a 5 yr old would say or think about. That with the fact that apparently noone else heard it makes me suspicious. The parents could have an agenda.
  • #82

@tomincali It's not greed; it's schools getting sick of kids not coming to school and the parents not giving a damn.
