These idiots are worried about a few people smoking a few cigarettes in open air, but have no qualms walking the few blocks to the beach sucking in a couple thousand cars' exhaust fumes? People are really stupid!

@Food4thoughts ""The smoking prohibition is the result of a number of complaints from visitors who have been affected by second-hand smoke on the guarded beaches," park Superintendent George Price said in a statement."
Litter is litter. A butt is certainly not worse than a dirty water logged diaper.

    @Nemesis3X
I'm basing off many other public beaches I've been to where smoking is prohibited and the reason for that. You know how difficult it is to pick up a thousand cig butts in sand?

@Food4thoughts slightly harder than soda can taps and bottle caps? Etc. I'll admit if they were smart about it, that's the one and only thing they should claim, but I'm willing to bet more often than not it starts with some overbearing mom that's unhappy with her life and the brood she's toting around, complaining....... "What about the children?" For her 30 seconds of perceived fame.

@PauldenZangpo Touché, however in a situation such as that, why are the People trying to dictate where people choose to enjoy their vice?
  • #20

@Threeper301 because second hand smoke is a know carcinogen. Besides, smokers are nasty creatures who don't police up their cigarette butts, which end up in my sons sand castles.

@Threeper301 because now days it seems noatter what the situation there's too many people always looking for something to be all butt hurt looking for something to cry about. Just because they don't want to do it then they believe no one should.

The only logical reason I could understand to ban smoking is due to the inconsiderate littering of cigarette butts which are an overwhelming eyesore in major areas. Then again, every other inconsiderate jackass throws their trash over the beach areas as well. Ban litterers.

I use to be a smoker. And I'll agree now that people should be respectful and pick up their butts and depose of them in a ashtray or butt bucket. Banning all together on public taxed payed property is illegal.

@Food4thoughts oh I know. I'd be lying if I told ya if I never tossed a smoke on the ground. But I've be smoke free for about a year. Did it cold and that was from a pack a day to nothing after 11 years. Hardest thing I've done. Now I'm in a gym lifting and run 3 miles a day 5 days a week
  • #78

@jmann88 i smoked for nearly 50 years and quit. i went from 4 to 5 packs a day to 0 within a week. it was somewhat difficult, but not all that bad.

i don't and can't run, and i stay out of gyms. it seems that you traded one habit for another.

It's the height of lunatic liberalism to think smoking on the beach is harmful to anybody but the smoker. Through the filter, into the smokers lungs, out into the air where it is immediately dispersed. Lmao. Yet the lunatic liberals claim it's worse than the actual smoking of the cigarette. Hilarious, but par for lunatic liberalism.

no, sweety... it's not the 'liberals'. you seem to be stuck on that word, huh. in fact, cape cod is an extremely conservative area.

@dances-weebles I used to live in Hyannis and conservative may have applied to the senior citizens...but the rest of the cape is deep dark blue.

@megaleft I'm sure there are libs that smoke, but the fact remains that nanny state libs are the ones who ban smoking. I've yet to see a conservative call for any f these bans.

Leave it to the Republic of Taxachusetts. Whatever guarded beaches means. You just have to take a stroll. And plenty of Cape Cod beaches are not lifeguarded and it is just seasonal. My only issue is with anyone that doesn't pack out what they pack in. Leave no trace.
  • #109

@TrumanSparks There are boundaries to what is Life Guarded. It is not infinite. Been there, done that. The area is marked. For liability of course.
  • #133
    !
@TrumanSparks Thanks. My point. You just go out of bounds. And most people don't swim and smoke at the same time. It is the filter thingy. Field strip your cigars or cigarettes. Baggy for the filters.

people would still toss their used cartridges on the beach, many of which are toxic plastic which contain ppg and peg, that are extreamly toxic, to us and even more so for fish. and are not biodegradeable...tho there are safer alternatives. i have not found one i can buy where i am. And the popular ones are sold instead. Some are also one time use, and contain a battery and the liquid...which is still enough for a child to pick up and use. or rush under their feet. I really wish people respected things enough to take with them what they brought in. Then these kinds of rediculous unconstitutional bans would not be needed.

Here in Ottawa, Canada's capital city, smoking is banned in bars and restaurants and commercial patios, in public buildings and malls, outside at the entrance to public buildings in the downtown core, in public parks which include beaches, and in arenas and conference halls. It has been a great improvement to the quality of life and I am sorry if smokers dont' like it but they can smoke at home or in their car if they wish (although that may soon be banned as an act of distracted driving just the same as the physical use of a cell-phone for a telephone call or for texting is banned). Smokers can still smoke while walking down a public side-walk but there is pressure on the public health officer to ban that as well. It's great to live in a smoke-free environment and it has led to fewer and fewer people smoking. The percentage has dropped significantly from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. It's probably down by 10% from about 30%.
  • #300
    !
maybe actually look up the figures...smokers still account for more then 50% of the population. And if you consider smokeing bad, the air your breatheing is filled with it, and then there are paticulates. canada has a long way to go. banning smokeing is not gonna help reduce industrial pollutants. Or improve the byproducts of nuclear waste.

Fair comment. You can thank Stephen Harper and his Conservative Government for promoting that kind of development. Not everyone is on-side with what is being done with the Alberta Tar Sands or the fracking especially in the Maritimes. A change of government would help but everyone is chasing money so I'm not sure things will change much.
  • #306
    !
@pazsion I don't know where you got your statistics but 50% of the adult population do not smoke in Canada. The highest province might be close to 30% but most of them are in the low 20s. As for particulate matter in the air, aside from car exhaust, which can be bad in metropolitan Toronto, most of the particulate air-born pollution comes from factories in the northern US states, Detroit being a biggy along with Chicago. We are all downwind from these major industrial cities.

Smoking tobacco or anything else should be done in the privacy of their own home where they will be less likely to harm others with toxins.
Also. who wants cigarette butts between your toes when you are running across the sand.

@yodibactum Amen, and those authoritarian fart sniffers think nothing of letting their little rats crap on the beach. I've been to Cape Cod , I've seen them do it and they carry poop bags too.
  • #299

i guess you should keep yourself at home too, as you also release toxins...that harm others...maybe do some researc into the bio availablity of *known* toxins available to you inside and outside your home. Then try to go tell those people who produce those things...keep that stuff in your home...

In my experience many of those who sit on the beach smoking are completely inconsiderate of others down-wind. Some folks also use the beach as a giant ashtray. I think this could be resolved by issuing citations to rude smokers rather than a blanket ban.
  • #304
    !
i like this idea, that would mean they would have people there to provide a safe enviroment. They could avoid the fine or sitation, if they clean the whole beach.
  • #292

Smoking should be permitted, but smokers must dispose adequately of their butts... they should be required to bring a container to take them away. Otherwise the only ban on smoking should be, in any case, on some roofed or closed areas like pavilions, changing areas, or restrooms.

I'd be more concerned with the fact that there's already enough litter and that most smokers dip their cigarettes into the sand and just leave them there. Cigarette smoke also smells like shit and since way less people smoke now a days since say, the 70s, more people don't want to smell it. I don't know about you but if I was at the beach with my family and having a good thing the last thing we want is to smell another unpleasant thing and to see cigarette butts all over the ground, it makes the beach feel trashy. I don't care about allowing bars and other businesses allow smoking but beaches tend to be these places that anyone can go to. You can go to a different restaurant, most people can't go to a different beach. If you really want your nicotine fix then just step off the beach for a bit, there's no need to be selfish about your smoking habit and expect everyone to be fine with it just so you can feel a bit more comfortable right near everyone.

It's disgusting to be at the beach and dig your toes in the sand and come up with butts between your toes.

If you're THAT addicted, stay your ass at home.

kind of foolish to think the cig butss are the worst thing your sinking your feet into...i guess it's good you don't know what else is in that sand huh?

Really, I am not a smokers but when are we going to stop trying to control people life. But i guess someone who needs to smoke pot for a cancer treatment we going to put a stop to them No or just the same person who loves to get high. Pot smoke smell is way more ignoring then cigarettes smoke.

As a former smoker, I was a lot more considerate than some of my smoking peers. My issue has (and still isn't) the smoke, it is the cigarette butts that smokers leave behind. Those butts don't decompose, which is the issue to me.
