Here's an exemption to vaccination schedules that makes sense: allergy to the vaccine. Large scale exemptions are simply the infectious disease version of Russian roulette with the pistol aimed at the heads of all children.

The only way to have "herd immunity" is for most to be vaccinated. I kniw there are real reasons for not having vaccine, like the one you mentioned, allergies. Not only are these parents putting their own child in danger, but are endangering others. I had all my sons vaccines on schedule, and I did hate seeing it, but, as I remind him when we get our flu shot, a needle's pain goes away quickly compared to the illnesses.

I have a true allergy to the tetenus vaccine. With each vaccination, the reaction became more severe. I'm told it's very rare to have an allergy to tetenus vaccine. I worked 25 years in a hospital and was required to be up to date with immunizations. I had told employee health that I had a severe reaction as a teenager and tried to avoid getting it after a needle stick. They didn't believe it was a true allergy and insisted I get the vaccine. I spent the next three days in ICU with brain swelling. Even though I had a rare reaction to a vaccine, my children were vaccinated on schedule and did just fine. If there could be any improvement in how they implement the vaccines, they should take a patients word for it when a patient reports an adverse reaction. I remember Polio in the 50's and standing in line for the vaccine. Many of my friends still have physical impairments due to contracting polio. Vaccines save lives.

I base my medical decisions on Jenny McCarthy's opinion. That reminds me, I've had this bump on my leg...I need to ask Jenny if I should go to the doctor. ;)

@Lawgone "I need to ask Jenny if I should go to the doctor."

Which is like asking Rush Limbaugh if Tylenol is just enough.

How do you know it's not from the thousands of people coming from the third world south of border? They should AT LEAST be getting vaccinations or antibiotics before they're just allowed to gallop their illegal asses over here.

same applies to medical professionals unfortunately, and again...our children suffer because we didn't do any research, and took their word for it.

Okay, but what about AMERICAN parents who also aren't vaccinating their children? If you get both of your MMR vaccinations you are 99.9% protected from Measles, if you get 1 shot it's 90%.

However with no shots, you are not protected against the disease at all. So even if it is the immigrants, if AMERICAN parents vaccinated their children they wouldn't end up getting sick and possibly dying.

@Ironicguy follow your point a little further....
Good job pointing out how this administration's ASININE and lawless agenda is allowing disease into our populace. They can't even follow simple disease prevention procedure. Smh

Science has joined ranks with the alarmists and politicians to their own demise. Electing Nobel Prize winner Al Gore to be their spokesweenie didn't help either.

What is this 1900? Because how else could so many people not understand medicine and the human body? Get your children vaccinated. There's not many good reasons not to.
We've made so much progress in the medical field, let's appreciate that.

These people are going to send us back to the dark ages if we all keep dying of preventable disease.

    "What is this 1900?"

1900 primitive? But smoking opium relaxes the mind and the joints, don't forget a spoonful of mercury a day keeps the doctor away, and most importantly disobedient children can be calmed by a little soothing syrup.... only 70mg of morphine.

Yes those are all real things.

@The_Gipper Don't forget, those bad headaches and sore throats can all be alleviated by just a pinch of heroin (available at your local Walgreen 1900). Progress is amazing.

    Stands up and cheers!!

Vaccinations for childhood diseases have been around for decades. The risk of proven problems are very very low. And in my opinion the risk of getting a serious illness outweighs the possible risks.

    Having said that

The only vaccination I will not get my children is the HPV but not getting doesn't put thousands at risk.

Perhaps if we didn't have such a large influx of already infected people of various diseases. I seriously doubt that the concentration of anti vaccine people are in California and the southwest, yet that is wehre the concentrations of disease outbreaks are.

@The_Gipper My favorite American nostrum is laudanum, a tincture of opium (opium dissolved into grain alcohol) popular among antebellum Southern belles. Being "vaporish" had its upside.

Yep, an outbreak of whooping cough in California couldn't POSSIBLY at all be from California's liberal illegal alien sanctuary policies and HAS to be caused by those evil "anti-vaxxers", right? But I'm sure the argument from the left will be that "if your kids are vaccinated, you won't have to worry about all the infectious 3rd world diseases illegals are bringing with them!". Smh.

@galt45 Your link has this information: zero. Notice how the headline on it ends in a question mark? A sure sign a news outlet is trying to make a story sign when they have nothing.

All the south-western states have immigrants coming in. If immigrants were the sole source of the problem, we would see all those states affected. But no. It's California which is currently struggling with an epidemic and the story is quite right it is because ignorant people who mistrust science are not getting their children vaccinated.

My daughter a Teacher recently had to get re vaccinated for measles because of kids who were not. I'm saying flat out she ends up dead because some dumber than box of rocks parents didn't vaccinate their kids I'm not only going to sue them for everything they own I'm going to get them charged criminally .

When I was a child I had the Chickenpox, I never thought about getting the Shingles Vaccine, at 72 I suffered with severe pains and bumps on my back and shoulder. The pain was so severe just leaning back on a chair or couch was like putting a hot Iron on it. Took 6 months for the effects to start going away, but still have to wait for several months before I can get the vaccine. Shingles is a form of the herpes virus.

I do believe that parents not getting their children vaccinations is the primary reason for the increase, but I also believe that our open borders and millions of unvaccinated disease carrying illegals flowing into this country runs a close second.
  • #91
    !
How many parents do you think actually don't get children vaccinated? Compare that with the millions of illegals flooding our nation.....do the math.....
  • #135
    !
Probably very few parents do not get their kids vaccinated and if it were not for the open borders and disease carrying incubators crossing the border by the millions it may not have been a problem.

Its too soon to tell what caused this. There was a similar outbreak in 2010 in California that (after studied) was caused by: " Many factors likely contributed to the outbreak, including the cyclical nature of pertussis, improved diagnosis, and waning immunity (anti vaxxers)". There was no blame put on immigrants in that study.
  • #187
    !
@Crashd1 of course there was no blame put on ILLLEGAL immigrants, that wouldn't be PC. Legal immigrants are required to be immunized, so they are not the issue.
  • #216
    !
@Yank Its not an issue of PC. If they are to blame, show me evidence and proof. If not, blame is just anecdotal. Just because you might believe it is immigrant related, doesn't make it so. You must have proof and they must understand the true origins of it. If there is no proof, then you are turning a disease into an unrelated political issue.

They can't because Americans are so spoiled and over-entitled, they think their opinion is more important than fact -- and many can't even tell the difference between the two. It's a shame, though, that it's children who pay for it.

CLOSE THE DAM BORDERS!!!! Governments restricts everything, plants, animals, lumber, foods, etc, all have to be inspected & yet the flow of illegals into the US isn't enforced. Just like swine flu, we should sue the Obama administration for endangering our lives!!
  • #255

Hang on there a minute, cAiZnBadship! I'm no fan of Barack Obama (I didn't vote for him, let alone his GOP opponents at the polls during either the 2008 OR the 2012 POTUS elections, but we really cannot blame Obama for the problem of illegal aliens coming over the borders, for it began in earnest during the Reagan Administration, and has continued since.
  • #264
    !
Don't you think its time everyone stops playing the blame game! The current prez has the ability to secure the border & he chooses not too. CHANGE?? The problem is currently out of control way worse then ever before. Serious problems need serious solutions not a half ass president that spends his entire term acting like a spineless coward! My son was very sick from swine flu & I just had to get a whooping cough shot to be around my first grandchild. The point of my comment is why do they inspect everything coming into CA & yet they are looking the other way when it comes to our (your & mine) health.
  • #23
    !
I think it's from more illegals crossing the border. They aren't up to Spode on vaccines, either. The numbers of citizens not getting vaccines may have stabilized? I haven't heard of that trend gaining momentum lately. So it's gotta be illegals.

If your theory held water, the whooping cough epidemic would be strongest at the busiest crossings, which are not in CA.
  • #188
    !
@Nikkinala no, it is where they are located, not where they cross. Also there were 4000 case in Texas last year.
  • #217
    !
@Nikkinala I didn't say at crossing areas. Obviously it's where they end up living at, where other family already settled. And we see it in other states where temp sheltering is.

The problem is stupid people. The bell-curve means that about 1/3 of the population falls into that category. Had you noticed that about 1/3 of the US population votes Republican? It surely can't be a coincidence.
