"I appreciate the offer to greet you at Austin-Bergstrom Airport, but a quick handshake on the tarmac will not allow for a thoughtful discussion regarding the humanitarian and national security crises enveloping the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas." "I would instead offer to meet with you at any time during your visit to Texas for a substantive meeting to discuss this critical issue."

Seems to me like Obama is more worried about shaking hands for the sake of image while Perry is more inclined to work on the problem at hand...the massive influx of illegals. Just my opinion....

That was the governor's way of saying to the president.....the time for bulldung has passed.....lets get to the job at hand on an emergency issue.....

Firefighters do not waste time shaking hands while the forest is burning to the ground.....

It doesn't sound like Governor Perry turned down the handshake, it sounds like he's simply saying he'd rather have an extensive discussion than a quick handshake. Which means he didn't snub any handshake, and upon meeting the President he most likely will shake his hand.

Maybe. But not meeting the President of the USA when he lands in your state is a discourteous political snub. No way around it.

Obama refuses to even visit the border. He is
Such a hypocrite it's disgusting. He refuses to
Work w/ the other side and continues to ignore and plays the "blame game". His latest
Statement speaks volumes. "Sue me". He needs to be impeached, he is incapable of doing his job. Anyone else would be fired for
Incompetentcy...I would never shake his hand. He is an enemy of America.

Visit the border AND DO WHAT???!!! He's not Sarah Palin, tripping over herself for a photo op. He's going to let the border patrol continue doing their job.

@NormalFlora Let him go to the Border to see for HIMSELF what its like. This is Complete
Insanity. Open ALL the borders? Where the
Hell does it end. This POTUS is a total failure!

@NormalFlora Btw---He's done more photo ops than most actors! He just likes the ones that make him look good...pretty fair to say,
    Those days are over.

Perry has a crisis in his state caused by the inaction of the current president. He does not need to go for a photo -op as Barry travels to one of his many fund raisers for the communist party . Perry has much bigger issues to deal with like leadership.

@RoyFloyd not as good as we had hoped but we can keep trying. Then you can all live happily ever after in the other 49 unless you take Mexico (or Pakistan) into the union.

@gulf01 I'm guessing you're a Texan, and I only wish y'all the best. Might even take a some states with you, the Okies would good for that ride, perhaps a few more from the deep south, yearning to be free from those onerous 13th, 14th, and 15th imposed by the damn yanks. Part of Mexico, mostly around Monterrey, might also want in, if you'll take them. OTOH you could lose El Paso, more akin to the desert Southwest than Texas. Then you'll have to figure out what to do with all the libs in Austin. Might work out a deal with California to trade it for Bakersfield.

Hang in there Rick. Obama just wants photo ops before he goes golfing. He won't get anywhere near the border and would like to sweep is failures at border security under the rug. The taxpayers don't want his $3+B fix to a crisis he created. He has to realize that it takes good policy to run a country, not just throwing money at problems and watching it vanish with no solution.

I'm smelling cow patties here, since their meeting is TOMORROW and this article has a completely different take on it....
"As Perry said he wanted "a substantive meeting" rather than a "quick handshake" at the airport, White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett sent the governor a letter late Monday saying "the president would welcome a meeting with you" while he is in Texas."

Boy, can a liberal rag push the boundaries of the truth.
And, conservative rags are not any better.
@PNWest..........that's "bi-partisanship"... ..see how investigative readership works.....

Thank you for the link; it clearly reads that the Governor doesn't just want to say hi, shake hands, and move-on. What I believe the Governor wants is to greet the President & shake hands...but more important make time for both to deal with the crisis at the border...SUBSTANTIAL...quality time.

I use to like Rick Perry...but he has come to California recently and said not-so-nice things while drumming up business for Texas. He also has made some unfair accusations without providing verification.

I don't want to open up "flood gates", but I really don't understand where the political advantage is for the President when people are saying he is bringing all these children up here...it's just senseless. The law, "H.R. 7311 Subtitle B Sec 212.'INTERIM ASSISTANCE FOR CHILDREN'" is CLEAR: Eligibility and Determination must be established. They are not promised citizenship, money, or even a temporary stay.

They are promised one thing: A court date. The law, passed by the 107th Congress - House of Representatives and signed by President Bush January 01, 2008 was meant to protect children WHO DO NOT LIVE IN ANY COUNTRY THAT BORDERS THE U.S. and have come here under duress.

No President would want to be in this situation. He can't return them because the law won't allow him to, but he doesn't have the resources to take care of them. This crisis is President Obama's "Katrina" - only it is thousands of misplaced children who don't live here. The GOP House is trying to rectify H.R.7311 so the President can return the children without the required "Court" procedure.

If you're interested, here is the link to the law; scroll down to TITLE II Section 212 (it's very plain to read and not as tedious as it may seem at first glance):

    http://www.state.gov/j/tip/laws/113178.htm

Again...thank you stepped_in_it for providing the link.

They should be shaking hands right at the boarder anywhere along the Rio Grande for all the world to see. Look I live in El Paso, Mexas 1/2 mile from the boarder on the west side of town is it secure NO HELL NO!!!! I see it every day there is no fence and only a little bit of water about bathtub wide most of the year. That is all there is between the USA and Mexico. I can walk down to that sandy creek and watch people cross back and forth anytime they want. If a boarder patrol agent comes by they just go back to Mexico and wait for them to leave and cross into the USA. The people up north have not a clue not a clue

If you live so close to it one would think you would know it is spelled border, I mean come on you must see signs that say "border" all the time. How about all them Border Patrol cars do they all spell it boarder too, if so I feel sad for your State. And you say us folks from the north don't have a clue?

@Proud_Agnostic ..Damn right it would work, Obama would declare a militarized zone just to keep illegals from trampling the golf course. We just got to built golf courses the complete length of the border. Immigration problem solved!

At what point do you propose we quit kissing the would-be dictator's arse and openly rebuke his idiocy and skirting of the Constitution? He's been given the smack down 13 times by the Supreme Court! I have ZERO respect for this jerk.

BTW, as a fellow Libertarian, and surely supporter of shrinking the welfare state, what do you suppose is going to happen if these folks are given a free pass? HINT: Welfare state and taxation without representation.

Remember.....you're talking about a president whose first official act was to load his and Joe Biden's butt on Air force One and go to New England because a Black professor was profiled while on his porch and drink a beer with him and the cop. Biden had two or three.

I don't see the story here. He was invited to the airport. He chose not to go. I think he was within his rights to ask for a meeting with the president over issues that concern his state and his area of the country.
