What a mess...Unions just want the right to use intimidation as a tool to force employees to join or vote to unionize. The best way to fight this is becoming a Right to Work state.

@Realthinker No doubt about that. Everything they spend belongs to someone else. They thrive on the hard earned fruits of their membership's labor. And a select few union bosses decide how it's spent.

@seedtick I wasted six years of my life married to a man who was the son of a local union president. I watched them plotting the lies they would tell the rank and file about why they should vote for certain people, or issues, or to strike. They knew they were lying, they used the word. But control of the rank and file for their own power and purse was all they cared about. The average union member has no idea how he is being manipulated and played for a fool.

If it wasn't for union we wouldn't have 8 hour work days, 5 day work weeks, paid vacations, employer paid health benefits, etc. When unions became powerful, the middle class grew. When unions lost power the middle class shrank.

That was then, what we have now would make the union bosses of old turn in their graves! Have you ever worked in a union environment? I have. All they do nowadays is protect lazy slugs who do the bare minimum because they know their jobs are protected. The problem today are public sector unions. They produce nothing and drain the American taxpayer, especially the teacher's unions. In my area their salaries make up 2/3 of the district's budgets every year. It's sickening. They are the 1% around here when the average wage is around $45k and they are making nearly $100k...on our backs no less.

All the items you listed are now laws on the books, so in reality, we don't need them any longer.

@methinks Would you mind showing me what laws mandate a 40 hour work week, an 8 hour work day, 5 day work weeks, paid vacation, employer paid health benefits?

@PNWest 40 hour work week regarding pay, see the Fair Labor Standards Act. This covers overtime above 40 hours, etc.

The 5 day week and 8 hour day vary from state to state, but not everyone works those hours. Nurses, for example, can work 3 or 4 days with 12 hour shifts and be paid a full weeks pay. I once worked a 7 day rotating shift on all 3 shifts. I also worked mandatory 12 hour days mixed in with 8 hour days. Again, these are all regulated by individual states. Just Google it. It's very easy to find.

@methinks In other words - no laws mandating 40 hour work week other than for a subset of people. No laws mandating a 5 day work week or 8 hour day. No laws mandating employer paid health benefits. No laws mandating paid vacations. Pretty much like I said.

It's been around since 1935. Hardly anti-American unless you figure only the employers are American and not the employees.

@Lorth Nope. I just an employee should be allowed to vote secretly on weather they want a union and not be coerced to join like they have been since 1935.

No ... I don't think anyone should have to join a union. I work for a union -- no, NOT a member -- and they promote greed, laziness, no accountability, and outrageous wage/pension/insurance demands.

Liberals complain about jobs being sent overseas then push for legislation like Card Check. Then when jobs do move over seas they blame those jobs moving over seas on republicans. As if lower taxes, fewer regulations that, cost businesses Trillions Anually to be compliant and less government interference is the cause for businesses moving over seas.

That's right it was the Bush tax cut that sent businesses overseas.

Free and democratic society would not allow card check but socialist Obama policy would surely make this happen

With Obama it is like the Mob is running our country and with Biden, NancyP and HarryR it is like we have the three stooges running the house and senate

Unionization should only occur via majority vote, and that vote should be secret ballot. No one, not a union nor a government nor an employer, has the right to know an individual's vote on any topic or candidate. Period.

Politix, could you have chosen a scarier photo of this guy? He looks rabid. And conservatives accuse this site of leaning left. Sheesh.

Card check is not about whether we like or dis-like unions or whether unions are good or bad, it's about workers deciding by vote if they want to be unionized. I have worked in both environments and have found that if the work force is unionized it''s because management sucks and are tyrants. No one needs a union when they are being treated fairly. But be careful what you vote for. I fared much better in a non- union environment. My current job is unionized but I am not required to be in the union and they can't go into the voting booth and force you to vote Democrat either.
