ARIZONA: Republican Jeff Flake
Politics: Libertarian Republican. Sides with Democrats on some issues (e.g. Cuba), but opposed bailout, the stimulus, and Obamacare. Also against earmarks.
Background: AZ congressman since 2000.
Why he won: Won against Independent-turned-Democrat Richard Carmona. Flake was the favorite before Carmona joined the race.
Politics: V. liberal. Now supports Obamacare after first backing single-payer healthcare.
Background: WI Congresswoman from 1998. First openly gay Senator.
Why she won: Beat Tommy Thompson (former WI governor). The Senate seat has been Democratic since 1957.
