    It should have never been started. We are talking about the possibility of this thing costing hundreds of billions of dollars. What a waste. It's 12 years in development so far and plagued with problems. Cut the damn thing!

    I'm sure this fighter jet will be very effective against our enemies like 6 Arabs in a pick up truck. Who I wonder do they perceive is the enemy this will give us air superiority over

    These projects come about by congressmen and senators of both parties giving political paybacks to big defense contractor campaign donors. President Eisenhower warned of this in 1960 and things have only gotten worse. On a side note - did I just make a post that blamed democrats and praised a GOP President? I'm feeling a bit woozy.

    @PNWest
    It amuses me to no end when people quote the latter part of Eisenhower's farewell address and completely ignore the first half, much of which they'd probably disagree with. Besides when Eisenhower gave that speech the defense budget consumed over 15% of the nation's GDP, nowadays it's closer to 4, the defense budget alone consumed over 50% of the federal government's outlays as compared to about a fifth today. Also the the U.S. had just extradited itself from a very bloody and unpopular war, i.e. the Korean War, and as Eisenhower probably well knew we were well into the process of getting ourselves deeply involved in a new one, Vietnam. Add on top of that the bogus issue of the so called bomber gap of the 1950s and the fact that part of the platform the president elect had ran on was the nonexistent "missile gap" that again Eisenhower probably knew didn't exist and it's no wonder he was preaching caution. I'd imagine if he would have known the manner in which that speech would be quoted and by whom he may very well have used different terminology.

    @rmancassman Our government does not evenly remotely resemble the one from the 1950's. We didn't have the various wars on drugs, terror, and poverty. Heck we didn't even hear of medicare, a program today with over 100 trillion in unfunded liabilities.

    there are'nt going to be any cuts.

    there are only going to be tax increases... and some of those tax increases and generated revenue will be coming from 401 k plans. if any of you who voted for Obama has a 401 K, that is already being discussed as on the table as a very large Revenue pool.. of course it will not effect federal employees pensions only private retirement accounts that are fully funded..
    as for any of this ridiculous cut talk, anyone who's over the age of 10 should know when they say cut they actually mean not spend as much as they had planned.

    @MongoAPillager - no need to raid your 401K. Just keep spending and printing. It does effectively the same thing (unless you've got some buried treasure you'd like to keep off the books)

    Yes, it should be cut. I had heard that Congress demanded one very expensive plane that could accomplish all types of missions rather than pursue different cheaper designs that specialized in different mission types. We end up with one design that is too expensive to risk getting shot down and is so far still unable to fill all of the rolls that it is expected to do.

    That may be very true, that is exactly the type of thing a contractor could due to assure the project doesn't die, no matter how it performs on the merits.

    All these wasteful projects should be cut. A total waste, they are buying planes before the planes have even been shown to be able to sucessfully operate. Even if I supported military spending this particular project is a fiasco, totally benefits lockheed, but will probably lead to the desths of lots of soldiers, and cost overruns galore. Read the aricle inbthe times before this was posted.

    Our advanced fighters have always served us well in every conflict. We should not be so quick to give up our technical superiority in this area.

    In reading the comments I notice a fallacy that is quite common. we are a world economy now whether you like it for not. China is not going to attack us. We're their best customer. Russia doesn't pose a military threat to us. The major nations are interlocked financially in the new world order. We don't need to building for another world war. That war will be nuclear. These kind of planes are obsolete already. Drones are the future of air superiority.

    This is not the first vertical take-off aircraft. The Harrier has been around for a long time, so long in fact, that most have been retired. I see this as trying to iron out all the bugs that plagued the Harrier for generations. At least it's supersonic. But let's be pragmatic, this newer version still seems limited in practicality. Kind of like a Corvette, fun if you can afford it, but not nearly as practical or reliable as the mini-van.

    The days of aerial dog fights are over. We need some fighter jets, but perhaps not these ones, since Lockheed Martin can't seem to get it together. Fewer jets, more drones?

    Good. There is no need for this whatsoever and the project shouldn't have even been started. Money just down the drain w/ no return on the investment. These types of projects are the reasons why we're in budget trouble, nobody takes into consideration the return.

    Yea, lets do away with the military!! We won't even have to dig out of the hole, China and Russia will just cover up the hole with us in it and socialist will rule the world !!

    Since many countries have invested in the development cost it will not be canceled, would cost the US billions to cut, plus there is already a precieved shortage between the f16 and f35 being fully incorparated, this is a scare tactic
