Boehner has no leverage. It's time the GOP does what Rand Paul suggests. Let the Dems do what they want for 4 years and let the America public decide which party should then be in power. Obstructionist politics for the GOP is all they've done for the past 4 years. And their ratings with America has never been worse. No leverage. None at all.
  • #34
    !
Agreed. The obstruction has to stop somewhere. Let the Democrats do as they want. If it helps then they can take it to the polls and vote out the Republicans, if it doesn't, Republicans have something to hit them with. I think Republicans biggest fears however... is that it will work. America re-elected Obama because we WANT HIM TO raise taxes on those who can afford it. And big deal, they are going back to the Clinton era tax rate... whoopy. You have a bunch of Faux News watching drones who act like it's the end of the world. And your right about something else... NO LEVERAGE. They can either agree to keep the middle class tax cuts, or let them expire and take the blame for raising taxes on the middle class. Obama doesn't have to make one single move at all. All he has to do, is sit back and watch.

@Phreakwars That pretty much covers it. I'm not liberal at all except for socialized medicine and disagree with Obama pretty much on every social issue. BUT, the public did elect him and it's just flat out wrong for the GOP to block him at every turn and then blame him for not doing what he said he would do. Let him do it. Let's see who is right. And if he's wrong then the Dems will pay for it just the GOP is paying for Bush today.

Cut entitlements? Sure. Start with Exxon. Don't let BP deduct its Katrina reparations from its corporate income tax. Stop overpaying Haliburton for snack bars and laundry services.

Only after that look at entitlements citizens have paid into through taxes.

Why penalize the people that paid into their entitlements because the stewards stole their monies. Before any entitlements are touched, all goverment salaries & retirements should be reduced and brought in line with the rest of the working people that support this country.

I have a quick one for you that I'm sure you already know. During the Iraq war Halliburton sold six packs of Shasta Cola's to the U.S. Military for 6.00 a six pack. Bought them for resale in the USA and then the Military transported them to Iraq and distributed them for Halliburton on tax dollars. Care to guess how much that same six pack of Shasta Cola sells for at the 99 cents store?

@marine1 What are you talking about all government salaries and retirements. My wife and I work for the government and make around a third of what we can make in the private sector. Our retirement is good because we are putting 16 percent of each of our salaries into our retirement. Friends of ours that work at the large private hospitals constantly say we are crazy for taking that less pay. with the government. We could do that but we both love our jobs and helping veterans and Native-Americans. How about those in the private sector take a pay cut and come down to what some government workers make.? Maybe that will make some things cost a little less.

Am I the only one who finds it interesting that pre election Obama was gonna tax "folks that make more than 250k" and now he as slid that back to the 200k mark? Everyone's taxes are going up, except the non producers. Just wait.
  • #201
    !
So everyone who doesn't make 200k is a non-producer? What a shame all of us worthless working class can't just walk off the job and leave the buses and subway trains sitting idle, kids sitting in empty classrooms, doctors without nurses (and in some cases, doctors themselves), no one to delivery goods, no one to answer phones, no one to serve meals, no one to fix things, no one to repair your car....and on and on.

We're all non-producers so why not just stop working so hard for people who obviously think we're worthless?
  • #202
    !
@PayThatCEO that's not what I said. I said that the level targeted for increased taxes will gradually work it's way down until only the non-producers are left untouched. Read more carefully before you get whipped into a tizzy.

The article said a "compromise" was reached, what compromise?? The speaker did all the compromising - Americans suckered again! Bush Senior and Reagan were both lied to by democrats in congress, when they said, if you would allow tax hikes, they would cut spending - Later! It never happened! This president promised to cut spending and address our humongous debt - later! This won't happen either because the Dems are addicted to our money. The monies garnered from the rich, wouldn't fund the the operation of this govt. for 6 days.

Raising taxes on the rich was just a canard and a ruse to distract from the real problem that will put this country belly-up in a metaphorical drainage ditch -- And that's Govt. SPENDING with reckless abandon, with a debt approaching 17 TRILLION $$, with 4 BILLION $$ being added daily. This is reminiscent of that Cruise ship that was lying on its side off the coast Tuscany....both rudderless and leaderless. I can hear the SOS being tapped out in the not to distant future as we sink below the waves - Bon Voyage Suckers!!

I'll 2nd that, have you read 1913 by oliver demill that's one of the three things that occured in 1913,and every since then government spending has increased with every president.

Taxing incomes exceeding $1 million was never the deal. Perhaps Obama can counter by agreeing to raise taxes on incomes exceeding $500k as a compromise. But before we start cutting medicare, medicaid, and Social Security, we should be cutting congressional lifetime salaries and top-of-the-line health care coverage that they enjoy and we pay for.
  • #134
    !
I think the tax increase for those earning a million plus is a good deal for America, but I definitly agree with your call on cutting congressional lifetime salaries and top of the line health care. I think SSI should be the mandatory plan for those elected to serve, bet they figure out in a hurry how to make SS thrive if that were the case.
  • #148
    !
It's a beginning at compromise, but that $1 million number needs to be lowered. Also, going after entitlements will not make a substantial difference to the budget deficit. It's too small a piece of the spending pie. Reducing military spending substantially is where a large impact to the deficit could be realized, but are we willing to risk doing that?
  • #132
    !
I will only agree IF the Democrats make concessions on entitlements. We can start with a minimum age for SSI and deductibles and co-pays on MEDICAID! Welfare wasn't "reformed" when AFDC was done away with and replaced with TANF. The cost was simply shifted.
  • #101
    !
Yes, it was a good idea for many reasons. The first is MOST of the very wealthy have said they have no problem with this. Even Oprah, the wealthiest woman in the States has said she would pay 50% in taxes! This is about those making more than 250k a year and has zero effect on the first 250k made. The poor are having a hard time getting by day to day and a tax increase would put them on the streets with kids.

The other reason is like it or not just like with Reagan; Obama has a political mandate after two Electoral landslides and a win in pop vote each time too. The more moderate Republicans who are conservative are good people and their leaders know, they have to worry about the 18% approval ratings they have in the House or risk being tossed out in two years so they must do more what the President wants this term than the gridlock of the first term. Democrats worked with Reagan and Republicans should work with Obama. After all, if you are a US citizen, President Obama is YOUR President regardless how you voted. The same was true of President Bush and all others before him. One President of all the people at one time. Americans will have yet another chance to vote in four more years if they don't like the results of the four years to come. They obviously liked the results of the last four years per the President.

Now let's get back the estate tax, change carried interest to current income, and take the cap off FICA contributions. Then make enough cuts that the deficit becomes a small surplus. The real test is whether the debt is being reduced. anything else is a sham, and a fraud on the American people.

NOW!! Let the Class Warfare Begin...Go Obama , oopps I mean Hitler
Hitler was a big class warfare guy also.
Lets see Dictaitior Obama and Dictaitor Obama , difference...Oh I got it "Skin Color"

Socialism "using some one else's monies" and sooner or later it runs out.

Liberals are learning what I try to teach my children every time we go to their favorite store: if you have already spent all of your money and have nothing left, you can’t buy more toys. The kids get upset, sometimes say nasty things, and even try to refuse to do their chores around the house. That sounds a lot like the striking teachers and public workers in Wisconsin. After awhile however, they come back to the table, admit they have learned their lesson, and announce they will save up for that toy they want.

WHAT socialism? BTW, Hitler was a right wing fascist, he HATED Karl Marx and the concept of Communism. Ever read Mein Kampf? It's right there in black and white, and stated several times. The key reason for the existence of the Nazi party was to fight Communism. Just like today's Republicans. LOOK IT UP.

I wonder now much we'd save by simply not allowing those who receive food stamps, Medicaid, HUD, or welfare to receive a tax refund check each year? I'm guessing it would be billions.
  • #47
    !
Probably about as much as we'd save by taking away different tax write offs and have everyone pay a flat rate. A true flat rate, not a flat rate and you get to write off your second house, etc...

Sure blame the poor for the huge deficit problem. You know, the one created by giving tax cuts to millionaires.

This sucks. We will never get major cuts to military spending, they will continue pouring money into wasteful spending like the F-35 fighter plane, which still does not perform properly, the u.s. will continue bleeding money to keep over 100 military bases in foreign countries, and Obama will cut new deal programs. Social security, which had nothing to do with the deficit will be tampered with. I hope the deal falls apart.

Now Obama can cut some entitlements. It's called reaching across the aisle and obama talked a lot about it during his campaign. I'd hate to think he was just lying.

The problem with this is there will be no cuts. I hope when the new congress comes in they have a new majority leader who has a set not a RINO takes over.

Which entitlements? We wouldn't need unemployment if the govt provided jobs. Social security is not driving the debt so there is no need to cut it. And everyone deserves medical care regardless of if they can pay. The only @jessejames raised some entitlements that need cutting. What about closing the over 100 military bases the u.s. has overseas? What about contracts for military fiascos like the F-35. It doesn't even perform as promised and we are paying lockheed anyway. You want to cut spending lets start there.
