@Hireman I didn't see where it said he violated his contract, is there really a provision in teachers contracts stating they won't desecrate the flag? The article does however say "Although desecration of the flag is a legal First Amendment right, Lexington-Richland School District 5 has placed Compton on administrative leave while they investigate the incident."
That sound to me as though they are looking for a reason to punish him.

@Buzzfriendly he was fired for bringing his biased opinion into the classroom. Most employment contracts can terminate for legal activities that violate their terms.

@Hireman Is it biased? While I wouldn't stomp on our flag, I recognize it is only a symbol and not the actual country to which we are loyal. Who actually is loyal to a piece of colorful cloth?

@Zazziness - Piece of colorful cloth??? You and I are real different. I can see by your flippant dismissal of the American flag as just a mere piece of colorful cloth why you and I normally don't agree on much.

Hhmm, we were taught growing up to respect the flag, never let it touch the ground and retire old ones properly. This just saddens me.

You know, I love my country, fear my government... and once I took an oath to defend this country against all enemies foreign and domestic... an oath I took seriously at the time... and have lived up to that oath every day of my life since. The flag represents our country... and I have deep respect for it... but recent events have me questioning... how much of that respect has been brainwashed into me. I mean, from day one in school... we repeated the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag every day for years without ever really understanding what we were saying or doing. THAT is brainwashing. So... I can kinda understand stomping on the flag... to wake people up. That flag is just a piece of cloth... no sense in getting upset at someone for doing whatever they want to with their cloth. There are ALL KINDS of things more important than a teacher stomping on a flag to get upset about!!! Open your eyes people... pick your battles wisely... and go to war!!!! If you REALLY love this country... you'll follow my lead. Google: Heavy Fed

I don't really like it, I can however understand the point he was trying to make.

IMO however, there is nothing wrong with patriotism in itself. I believe it does make a country stronger. In the UK we have allowed freedom of speech to perhaps go too far. Muslims burn the British flag in the streets of the UK are given a free pass (note it is ok to burn the Flag but not the Koran?)

Argentinians burning the British flag are given a free pass and allowed to stay in the UK.

Some things should be protected, not every freedom given is a progression of society.

@Biter In our country it is ok to speak bad about our country and burn our flag, but saying your religious, and Saying something bad about our flag with instead of the red and white stripes it has the rainbow flag stripes, (which offends gays as well) is usually shunned and your deemed racist.

Of course he meant disrespect, and also wanted to 'teach' disrespcect... There was no point to him stepping on the flag in front of his students. It's just another case of
Leftists doing what they do, they have contempt for this country. I'm curious, with
as much as they hate it, why don't they just leave and move to Siberia or somewhere
equally as miserable as they are, leftists are the most intolerant people in the world
and the most miserable...He should never get his job back, let him 'teach' in New England or Cal., they'd probably give him a raise!

@earl Thats a fine idea, teach those kids that the constitution is a piece of toilet paper by showing that those who excersize the rights conferred in it will be forced out of their jobs. Teach them that bullying people who express opinions is how we do things in america. I will never understand you so called "patroits" who love the flag, but hat the constitution. Love the liberty the flag symbolizes, but despise liberty itself.

    @PoliticalSpice
Well, I understand you completely. This SOB was teaching on government property and paid by the taxpayers. He destroyed public property paid for by the taxpayers. He should be teaching respect for a symbol bought and paid for with the blood of American patriots. You wouldn't understand.

Anyone who has gone to school and university in the United States and yet claims that he doesn't know that dropping the American flag on the floor and walking on it is not meant to be an offensive gesture of disrespect is a liar. People may have been allowed to make this sort of gesture under freedom of expression protection, but he did it in a classroom as a "learning experience". I think then that it is appropriate that he be fired, not just suspended, so that his students get the full lesson about the consequences of such an act.
  • #141

@Politicskid The article didn't say that he destroyed the flag, just that he left it on the floor and walked on it.
  • #169
    !
@Politicskid I don't know what the rules are now, but back in prehistory when I went to school and we said the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag every morning, any flag that touched the floor was supposed to be destroyed, not washed. That is probably considered anachronistic now.

@Dan_Tien That didn't occur to me. In that case, it's gonna cost the school district money to replace, so he did, in essence destroy public property.

This guy does what most Liberals do behind closed doors. Liberals hate the America of old. That is why Obama and his supporters want to "TRANSFORM" it. They are Socialists and hate so many things about America.

By stomping on the flag this teacher demonstrated the freedom and liberty for which this nation was founded and stands.

Those who oppose what this teacher did are showing themselves to be anti- freedom, anti-liberty, anti-Constitution, and anti-America.
  • #17
    !
Atleast fire the guy! But you would also have to come up with a punishment for showing Anti-American values towards children! I understand that he probably thinks this flag has nothing to do with the country, but it really does! The 50 stars represents the 50 states, the 13 stripes represents the original 13 colonies, and the colors red, white, and blue are the colors of our country! So the flag does show much meaning to this great country, and any school teacher that would go as far as to stomp it in front of their students, deserves atleast 30 days! People reading this comment might say I'm trying to limit his freedom of speech, but his freedom of speech is represented by that flag, which he threw to the ground and stomped on.

@PoliticalSpice I'm sorry, but what right does an employee of public service have to try and teach children Anti-American values? First off, he trampled the very flag that symbolizes his right to free speech, secondly, nobody pays taxes so their children can learn to hate the American flag! How am I the Anti-American one, you clearly want to protect the rights of an American hating citizen, I'm just saying he shouldn't be able to teach children to hate America unless it is on his own property in his own time!!
  • #58
    !
@Romney2012 how are you the un-american one. Simple you say the flag is a symbol of free speech but want to punish him for excerscising free speech. You claim he is teaching anti-american values. Is the first amendment an anti-american value? Are not one, but two, supreme court decisions defending what this teacher did anti-american.

You claim he taught children to hate the flag, if so why did some child he was teaching complain a bout it. Seems he made that student think about the flag. Maybe if people cared more about ghe constitution then the flag this country would be better off. People who seem content to worship the flag ad a symbol seem often to disrespect everything upon which the constitution is based. That is why liberty has been lost in this country, people care more about the symbol then the reality.

We have to get our lame ass congress to make an amendment against flag burning and acts like this on American soil. To me this EDUCATED asswhipe knew exactly the disrespect he was showing. People like this make me sick. Why is it they never go into a bar full of veterans and pull this stunt? Because they know that every bone in their body would have boot prints on it!
  • #30

Probably not going to make you happy but our Congress already tried that and the Supreme Court said that you are wrong. The Flag is just a piece of material, generally made in China.

You the same guy attacking me because I didn't support those fools in portland, saying way to stand up for the constitution, and here you are opposing the first amendment, saying veterans in a bar should stomp on someone who affords himself first amendment rights. And you folks wonder why obama was re-elected. A whole country is tired with bullies who want to push people around for doing nothing more then expressing opinions they don't like. That is why 70% histanic voters came out and voted obama. Cause they were tired of being "stomped on" by immigrant bashing. Judt likeyou want to stomp on people who don't respect, as @jessejaymes put it a piece of cloth that is probably printed in china

As an educator, he should be educated himself about showing the proper respect for our flag, and our nation. Reprimand him, and if he agrees to show the proper respect in the future, let him go back to work. He shouldn't lose his job, and career, because of one stupid mistake.

I just got my license as a Social Studies teacher and somewhat understand the point he was trying but his methods were all wrong. Not sure that he should be fired but he obviously lacks good judgement and should have known better. I would like to hear all of his comments during this lesson.
  • #7

Also Social Studies teachers are qualified to teach civics in High School. Part of that teaches the proper respect for the flag and how to honor it as mentioned by someone here earlier. Therefore this lesson would make it hard to teach civics and have anyone take him seriously as that would sound hypocritical.

@CommonSense Free speech is a write so nothing can be done legally. That however does not mean protect against release from employment. Companies and even schools can enforce a code of conduct that and fire people for breaking it, even if the actions is legal and constitutional.

It isn't free speech. Do you think you could go into your JOB at say IBM and spew idiotic stuff take down an ibm flag and stomp on it without any repercussions? He didn't do this on a street corner he did it as his job. A job that has rules and a specific scope. All of which does not include what he did. He can and will be held accountable to what extent we will see and that will be left up to his EMPLOYER. It is not free speech it is not doing his job within that jobs limits. If he doesn't like it then he ca quit otherwise he has to follow the rules.

Exactly, school boards set up the curriculum and teachers must follow it. I doubt any school board includes flag desecration in their curriculum. Well, maybe Madison, Wisconsin.

I agree, Tomincali. The flag that he was defacing is a symbol of an ideal that brave Americans have fought and died for all over the world for centuries. Men like Alvin York in WWI and Audey Murphy in WWII would be appalled as would all the brave heroes from all our wars to secure freedom for vermin such as this teacher to spew his sewage.

Kleindienst v. Mandel, a 1972 U.S. Supreme Court ruling barred Ernest Mandel et al., who wish to advocate doctrines against American constitution principles from positions of official authority.

Fire the person and take away their teaching credentials.
