15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, who performed at Obama's inauguration last week, was shot and killed at a Chicago park on Tuesday.
The teen was standing with friends in Vivian Gordon Harsh Park when a gunman ran out of an alley and opened fire. Police think the shooting was gang-related, since others in the park at the time had gang affiliations. Another 16-year-old student was wounded in the leg.
Pendleton was an honor student and a member of the King College Prep Marching Band and Drill Team, which performed at Obama's inaugural. Her cousin described her movingly as a "walking angel."
The Kenwood neighborhood in which the shooting took place is relatively crime-free, though South Chicago generally is notorious for gun crime.
