The constitution, and our form of government, was designed precisely so emotion and mob rule wouldn't make our decisions for us. It is SUPPOSED to be difficult to pass law, so that we don't lose our liberties due to hot-headed groupthink.

Most statists think that if we legislate all the ills of society away, then they will go away. Well, that's not the case! It didn't work for alcohol, it's not working for drugs, it's not working for gambling, it's not working for "illicit" sex, I'll argue that it won't work for abortion (although there are many who will disagree with me!). With that said, I must conclude that it will not work for guns either! All these 'bans' do is send the activity underground! One can only look to Washington DC to see that after the restrictive gun bans were overturned by the Supreme Court, the number of murders began dropping! In the late 1980s and early 1990s, there were as many as 450 murders per year! Last year, there were only 88! That's the fewest number of murders since the early 1960s!

For those who talk of bringing gun control to referendum? Ummm....bad idea! In fact a REALLY, REALLY, REALLY BAD IDEA! We must understand that our country is NOT a democracy! We are a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC! OR AT LEAST WE'RE SUPPOSED TO BE! The Constitution is there to set LIMITS on what the government can or can not do! It is there to protect the minority from the majority! It's a shame that we don't educate our youth about our Constitution because we need to do so! Unfortunately, we have diluted our education so much so that it's a far cry from when our country was founded.

Now, for those who say that 'the families of Newtown deserve a vote'? Well, they do! They deserve to have the ability to arm themselves against thugs like Mr. Lanza! You think more gun bans are the answer? Try telling that to Mark Mattioli who lost his son in that God-awful massacre; or Bill Stevens whose daughter's best friend lost her sister! Both of these men testified on behalf of those who support the right to keep and bear arms in front of the Connecticut legislature and (I believe in Stevens' case) Congress as well!

Take semiautomatic rifles and ammo clips off the table. Push universal background checks and focus on illegal guns by allowing the BATF to maintain records of gun sales and gun store inventories so that the 1% of gun dealers who make the majority of illegal gun sales can be shut down.

Ignore the people who say that you can't stop the illegal gun trade because they are paranoid that "law-abiding citizens" will be subjected to tyranny. Some of us are already living under the tyranny of gangsters with guns. Ted Nugent versus MS-13 equals dead Ted.

HITLER used the children for an excuse to take away the citizens gun and now you have Obama and his gang of thugs trying to do the same thing!!! Don't get me wrong I really hate what happened in Newtown my prayers have gone up for the families, but disarming us will not solve the problem!

I hate the Hitler analogy. Because, I can't see Obama, as Hitler. Obama doesn't stay in power after these four years. Hitler his entire life to rule. Hitler was a Nazi, correct. Nazis won't let any person of color join their gang. Find someone else to compare Obama to.

@Brownie actually, there were a few people of color who were Nazis. But, I agree, President Obama is no Hitler.

@Redrose Interesting, they never taught me that in college. They should. Thanks, I'm about to look it up. Is there a specific source? I own a copy of mein kampf. Does Hitler mention that in his book?(I got a little bored and didn't get very far. But, I guess I'll try to get through it now with this little peace of info. You learn something new everyday.

@Brownie Google Black Nazis and a youtube video should come up. Some books mention it, but I can't put my hand on one right now. There were Arab and African nazis and some blacks born in Germany as well.

The greater the availability to guns, the greater the ease in acquiring one for anyone with criminal intent. The easy access to guns is what got us into this mess in the first place.

Vote it up or down. Gun control will fail but at least there will be a record of who was in favor of it and who was against it. To not vote is just cowardly.

I talked with a man from Syria...who's family is still there. They are fighting for freedom from a nude toys regime with 100's of thousands dying so far at the hands of their OWN government! No one coming to their aid and what he said stuck with me big time! The people have old and out dated guns to fight with. They can't defend themselves. I told him this is why Americans refuse to give up THEIR guns! He laughed in full agreement! That's what it's ALWAYS been about! Protecting ourselves from an oppressive government...on our soil..in OUR yards and streets! There will ALWAYS be murders..with guns or knives or bombs or ANYTHING they can get their murdering hands on. Laws and enforcement if laws...without leniency that remains the answer. No tolerance for drug dealers and gangs, societal involvement and PRAYER Don't take our self defense away we ALL will be victims then

Even though it is our right to own guns. I can't imagine what parents feel when they lose their children to gun violence. I can imagine that their child death will forever haunt them and their views on gun control would. Any good parent would feel this way. especially, when illegal/legal weapons are easily obtained. Then the parents want to know how the hell was a madman/madwoman was able to get legal position of a gun that are used in militaries. But, I believe by owning a gun or three, is a must, in our hateful and crazy society. One have to be able to protect themselves from hateful, crazy people. Guns a necessary evil. Just don't let people with a history of violence and mental disorders legally obtain guns. But, I guess the war on guns is similar to the war on drugs, everybody wants some.

My rights are not subject to removal or restriction by a mere vote. Amend the Constitution through the process provided in it, or learn to live with guns around you.

Wrong! we live in a republic, the majority does not rule! I know that's how team Obama wants it but he and the rest of the "majority" should be going by the constitution. If you are so set on majority rules, then how are you going to feel when you are the minority?

If the Dems really, truly cared about children, they would outlaw abortion. They are using this as a power play to disarm the opposition and then . . . dictatorship.

Obama is only using the deaths of those poor victims to get done what he has been trying to accomplish since his election! It's the worse type of emotional blackmail! Shame on him. That boy, and any other person who wants to kill another ,would have found another way to do it if he hadn't had access to guns.
What Obama is trying to do is revoke the Constitution as we know it. Give up one right, and soon you won't have any!

Btw the hitler thing is historically wrong. Potus calling for votes are because Boehner is too much of a coward to call for votes. He later said he'll wait to see what the senate does 1st. Coward. We do need background checks. We dont need war guns w war clips. We do need research on gun violence. We do not need to help the mentally ill get seized guns back. Btw if u do anything to help childrens healthcare or brain surgery u r an enemy of the NRA.

They should at least address the issue and vote on it. It doesn't matter if it is to honor victims of gun violence or not. At least a vote would be a start to address a much needed discussion. I have lost far too many friends and relatives as a result of some idiot who should never have had a gun.

Sorry......like the vote we just took for President? The one where I heard several states that would have counted against Obama were uh not allowed to put their votes in?(hurricane problems?) no thanks....Why don't they allow THE PEOPLE to vote on whether they want guns or not? It is OUR right after all.... I know the loss of friends and family. Trauma of loss and sudden hardship...lost my husband when a farm tractor was driven on a freeway in the middle of the night with no proper markings...making it invisible. That is against the law too...I recieved no compensation...good ole boyz stick together... Saw three car accidents on the highway in Oklahoma last week in a 2 day period...two of them were killed... where do we start and where do we stop? Outlaw cars? Tractors? Just enforce the laws we have. Someone will always slip through regretfully....If we outlaw guns, or even high powered guns and clips...the "bad guys' will just continue to get theirs from gun runners etc. WE the sheeple would be the ones unable to defend ourselves... against anyone... A vote just puts us at risk since, obviously, there can be a lot of manipulation.... you do make a good point tho. It is what makes this a great country! People with different ideas and inclinations working to make it a good place for us all.. by the way. Syria? the people are killed for even mentioning that they dissagree with the Regime... we are still able to speak out and vote...lets not let anyone manipulate our ability to vote for or against any issue. Arm the school teachers...those who will carry, or a school guard...? We already have gun detectors installed in a lot of our schools... what happened to that?

The best thing Americans can do is to Google: Wikipedia + List of Rampage Killings
(check out the other categories of homicides too by incidents in different geographical areas of the world). They will see that this horrific phenomenon goes back CENTURIES, and is still happening even in places like the People's Republic of China and even Britain. Thank God that in Britain not many have been killed due to the terrible aim of perpetrators and the fast response of 1st responders, but it's still happening. You will also see the Utoey Island, Oslo, Norway massacre, in which 77 teenagers were murdered and over 250 wounded by a racist gunman who had jumped through every single considerable hoop the Norwegian government places on gun owners, including criminal and medical background checks; fingerprinting; photographing; psychological screening; completing a training program; licensing and tax-payment; photographing the weapon and even marking it with an additional, distinctive etching on its receiver, etc. Since the US Supreme Court ruled in Warren versus District of Columbia that the Police Departments, Sheriffs Departments, law enforcement agencies, governments, etc. do NOT have a duty to provide protection from us and keep us safe, then the American people also deserve to choose how to defend themselves through their choice of weapon. The Korean store owners in Los Angeles' Rodney King riots who were armed with AR15s and AK47s were the only ones whose businesses were not looted and burned and who were not physically injured by rioters. That makes just as powerful a statement as citing horrific incidents.
You can't have it both ways. You can't tell people: Sorry, we don't have a duty to protect you and then disarm them to boot.

A woman and mother of 2 was killed when a man hit her with his car while she was riding a bicycle. he claimed he was looking down at his phone when he thought he hit a deer.
... if Obama has his way he would be in cars, bicycles, cell phones and deer.

... that's how much sense is inside the mind of the poser at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

@bsking People from all kinds of reasons but to say that gun policies do not need addressing is just as ridiculous as the man looking down at his phone and thinking he hit a deer. Whether he hit the deer or a human he should never have paid more attention to the phone than his driving. True, guns don't kill but people do. Unless the discussion starts somewhere it will never get addressed and the problem will become much worse.

Newtown families already have a vote. They can ban all the guns they wan't from their very own community. They don't need a voice in my community, nor does the President for that matter.
