President Barack Obama summoned a surprising ally in his call for an assault weapons ban: Ronald Reagan, the iconic GOP president.
Obama tweeted Wednesday a message that says, "Even former President Reagan agrees: Weapons of war have no place in our communities." The message links to a quote by Reagan, who died in 2004, printed next to his smiling photo.
"I do not believe in taking away the right of the citizen for sporting, for hunting and so forth, or for home defense," the Reagan quote said. "But I do believe that an AK-47, a machine gun, is not a sporting weapon or needed for defense of the home."
Obama had previously mentioned Reagan's support for the 1994 assault weapons ban when he announced his gun regulation proposals last month. Obama is calling for universal background checks and bans on assault weapons and high capacity magazines.
