A Texas teenager is suing her parents - for the freedom not
to have an abortion.
The 16-year-old plaintiff, who is going by the moniker of "R.E.K.", has been granted a temporary restraining order against her parents Jeffrey and Denise Koen, whom she accuses
in a lawsuit of trying to force her into having an abortion via pill or other means. R.E.K. charges her father in particular with claiming that only he has the right to decide the fate of her child, and for stating that his daughter "needs an ass whoopin."
"We were asking the judge to stop them physically forcing her to have an abortion," said Stephen Casey, R.E.K.'s attorney. "They cannot drag her to get an abortion, and force an abortion on our client."
Why are R.E.K.'s parents so adamant in their belief that their daughter should have an abortion? That appears to spring from some rather personal politics, as their daughter tells it:
"Denise informed them that R.E.K. having the baby was the biggest mistake of her life, that Denise had already had four abortions, and it was the right thing to do in this situation," reads the suit.
