I didn't realize that upon becoming a Congressman you get a personal phone line with God. And He informs you who is forgiven and who isn't.
I gotta get in on this.

Can I get an extension.....or maybe a "party line" when you get your personal line?
Those who claim to be hearing god's voice, just may be hearing a voice....period. And that scares the be-jezus out of me!

@stepped_in_it What does the phone look like? Is it decked out in jewels and 'Fabulous!' like the Popes wardrobe? Or is it more simple like the Holy Grail?

Hi you've reached God's phone , sorry I'm not available to take your call. If you're seeking forgiveness from the voters of your state. Push#### pound it, you're screwed

Don't care! "God Has Forgiven Mark Sanford, Will Voters?".......then let him go work for God....I'm totally done with the criminal element in politics as I am in life!

I believe in second chances. They scare the hell out of me when i support them but I do think that everyone deserves at least one. This statement may come back to haunt me but i do think we all would like a second chance if needed.

@marine1 I also believe in second chances.....difference between my 2nd chances and everyone else is in my 2nd chance, they go to the bottom and work back up! Can you say unpaid intern for a few years?

God amazingly 'forgives" all these right wing low lifes who debase every principal there is concerning fidelity but never "forgives" anyone else according to hear them tell it. To the write of this op -ed and Mark Sanford? This old rock and roll heathen atheist who spend an entire adult lifetime of more than 50 years NEVER ONCE CHEATED ON HIS WOMAN. You people are a joke, you're hypocrites and you better hope there is no hell because if there is you're in the front of the line for you blasphemy. You disgust me.

@jessejaymes Yeppers......There's always a saying there....."judge not" is the beginning! Thank goodness I don't live in that fear of fire and brimstone. I live in the fear of my conscience!

@stepped_in_it You come up with these classic lines out of nowhere. "I live in the fear of my conscience!" What an excellent motto to live by.

Don't care. The majority of politicians are liers, hypocrites and/or on the take.
Tired of their multitude of excuses for not representing their constituents.

Souder and Sanford both had affairs. And their Speaker of the House was Newt Gingrich back in '94. Was there an adultery requirement in the fine print of the Republican Party membership card in those days?

I think it's a hard thing to ask family values voters to ignore infidelity but it's certainly been done before.

I was very turned off by all the religious references, though I know there are theocrats who love that kind of thing. For me, a politician sounding like a preacher sets off all kinds of alarms and so rather than appealing to me, it made me cautious about any recommendations.

Sanford is scum. I know full well it's not the case, but politicians should set a high standard for morality and the truth. Sanford clearly doesn't even come close.

Please....Forget about Sanford. The guy is the typical do nothing politician. Isn't it time to tell both the GOP and Democrats that we're no longer interested in their lies and where they are taking our country? I'm going to vote for Independents and other unaffiliated candidates. Why not? We certainly can't do any worse then where we are today.

    STOP electing these losers!

I believe in second chances. But don't give me this god bullshit. You need to make voters forgive you because that's more important and they are whos going to put you somewhere. Not god.

I could care less he had an affair and he's a hypocrite and I don't believe in God so this really doesn't matter one way or another to me. I take more affront to the fact he's been in congress since 1994. TERM LIMITS NOW

I do not agree with this view. It wasn't just infidelity. He misused public funds and went AWOL. He should not hold public office again. There can be no trust. However, I agree with many aspects of the viewpoint, regarding skill-set. He should remain in politics but be sidelined to a lobbying group or think-tank. He should chin-up, network, and contribute. This would be the best use of his skills, and the most profound atonement.
