    It's no wonder that the suicide rate in Iceland hasn't gone up. The Iceland citizenry did to those responsible what should have happened but didn't here in the U.S..

    Death as a consequence of policy decisions is something conservatives avoid discussing at all costs because it reveals how brutal the results really are. You cut off food stamps and kids will starve to death. You shove the homeless out into the cold and they die of exposure. You remove access to health care and people drop in epidemics.

    The list goes on. Usually they just answer with truisms like "Well, people should provide for themselves." Gee. Yes, they should. How about if we move on from the obvious to discussing the real issues which relate to how our society responds when someone can't provide for themselves?

    Read my post below, there is one very big way government could provide for the jobless and the hopeless but, in the name of sequester and spite, they have chosen to not make 100's of millions of dollars on oil and gas leases, provide jobs and cheap energy, by saying that in the name of sequester they will not issue any of these leases (sell them BTW and make money BTW and jobs BTW) and why? They can't afford to sell for hundreds of millions of dollars leases because the have to save money? HUH? Oh yeah, Obama wants as much pain, as much discomfort and as much joblessness as he can get, to make some political point. Great job, YOU voted for him, I didn't.

    That feels good, but what happens when everyone sinks because they were trying to save the rats in spite of the sinking ship? I don't think anyone is saying starve the children. Save for the Democrats every four years claiming that is exactly what the right wants to do. That false narrative is political abuse in my opinion. It is hard to convince someone that they would be better off in the long run if they worked rather than look for an increase in their check that magically appears every month when you can make more sitting on your ars than you can in the average blue collar job. It breeds complacency as well as a bad economy.

    @Tralee

    Why oil and gas? Why not some other investment, like high speed rail? This would provide tons of jobs and provide cheap energy.

    Could it be a lot of very rich people stand to make a whole lot more money from oil and gas?

    Just look at Greece... they've been doing it for 5 years now and the economy has shrunk every year. If someone can explain how a shrinking economy is good, I'm all ears.

    @AceLuby It's infinitely better than one that is belly up. Greece has been on the verge of insolvency for at least 5 years. Everything they have done has been to survive.

    @AceLuby Perhaps you can explain how it is that Germany has bailed out Greece every single year for the past 5-7 years and every single year Greece is back wanting more. We're not talking million here. BILLIONS approaching Trillions of dollars now. How does a country like Greece have a debt equal to the USA without the Military Expense and so many fewer people. Greece is starting to look like the world's biggest welfare state to me. Money in, nothing changes.

    History has shown that big government overspending on unsustainable entitlement programs that require an ever-increasing confiscation of private wealth doesn't work.

    @AceLuby There is AUSTERITY, and there is Greek austerity. Greece's problem has more to do with the euro than anything else. It also has to do with being a virtual total socialist state. As to the other examples the times cherry picks three of the stronger economies in the world. The NY Times is one of the most biased papers I have ever read. Its motto should be all the news as we think it should be.

    Austerity works at shrinking govt deficits at the expense of shrinking the overall economy. For those that want austerity measures here, please explain how a shrinking economy is good for anyone?

    So Greece, Italy, and Spain should can just start spending more money? You should go over there and tell them where that money will come from.

    What I see, Is a generation of children raised to believe that government is their god. What would happen to a person of faith if they thought god had abandoned them? This socialist experiment was a cruel hoax.
    No, these researchers are from the same academic ilk that has reduced economies, morality and medical science to theories . Ever witnessed a murder trial? They bring in an "expert" to refute another "experts" testimony and ultimately it's left to the jury. So believe in yourself and trust your instincts. How did society and mankind make it before socialist and atheism? Nothing lasts forever so ride the wave until and have faith. Nothing stays down forever, but don't do the same thing over again.

    A Legacy of an out of control Big Govt Debt Tsunami is unacceptable. Our own children and grand children must count for SOMETHING. If not, we will be GREECE but without German Tax payers to keep America afloat. It isn't a simply Yes or No problem.

    Why doesn't Greece just keep feeding the masses? Because the whole country would be suicidal when people start eating dogs and cats. This is what happens when you have a gaggle of people who have never run a business making executive decisions. People start looking to the gov't to get ahead instead of working to get ahead. If you have ten people pooled together financially and 1 of them is pulling the weight of 9 of them, and 5 of them are contributing nothing to the pot but taking from it to survive. Two of them breaking even, and two pulling their own weight. If number 1 gets sick or dies the entire group suffers as it was unsustainable from the beginning. It's really not that complicated.

    When government hooks you on welfare programs. Then they pull the rug out from under you.. of course you're not going to be happy. Best thing to do is take some personal responsibility and not get hooked on handouts to begin with. Then you'll have nothing to whine about when you get shut off.

    It's not the people on welfare who are unhappy. It's those of us who get up and go to work every morning so we can get paid less in order to pay more for the things we need. It's those of us who worry about getting sick and not being able to pay for it. It's those of us who don't get a vacation. It's those of us who don't even go on a Sunday drive because gas costs too much. It's those of us who shop at thrift stores, cut coupons, buy generic Cheerios in order to save every penny possible. It's those of us whose homes have leaky roofs and peeling paint, but repairs are too costly. It's those of whose cars are 15 years old, but who can afford a new one?

    No. People on welfare aren't unhappy. They have nothing to worry about.

    @PayThatCEO I agree with everything in your well worded paragraph. But austerity would slow down the redistribution of our paychecks into the hands of those who refuse to contribute. Those who depend on the government for sustenance when it's abruptly taken away will either be angry or suicidal. So the people on welfare WILL be the ones unhappy when/if austerity is put in place, but I agree WE are the ones angry now.

    @slayer98_l

    I agree, but should people on welfare be the only source we blame for our anger? Yes, they're more visable and yes, they've been the whipping boy for conservative pundits, but why don't those pundits ever draw light to the other "welfare programs" our tax dollars support?

    Foreign "aid" is a huge example of this. If we have even one hungry person in THIS country, is it right that our tax dollars are given away to foreigners? Why do we hate on our own people so much, yet think nothing of the hundreds of billions of dollars sent overseas, never to be seen again? And don't think that money isn't making some people incredibly wealthy. Imagine what all that money could do in ways to decrease welfare in THIS country.

    Do all those conservative pundits ever talk about the trillion dollars+(estimate) that is has been lost in revenue to this country due to offshore tax havens? Would our deficit be so horrible if we at least had THAT money in our pockets?

    Blaming the welfare crowd in this country is a diversion. It turns our heads from seeing where our money is really going.

    Ultimately the "suicide" results from actions that come out of the person's own body. Hence it is their own responsibility. If people change their perspective and change what they conceive of as important, even radically, even in total abandonment of social norms about what to consider important to one's happiness then they can avoid even feeling bad. There's no rule that I must consider anything to be important or to care about anything unless I choose to do so. If I was dying from some painful horrible disease rather than ask for euthanasia I would appreciate the unique experience I was having, I would re-conceptualize my pain as an enjoyment and on top of that enjoy my transcendence of pain and the fact that most people wouldn't do that. People are too attached to their mental concepts of pleasure and pain to the point where these concepts are enslaving people. Play with these concepts, shake these concepts, discover their inherent subjectivity and changeability. Then you will always be free of suffering unless you choose to suffer and you will realize that you always had this freedom you just didn't realize it.
    The problem is that our current society promotes a way of thinking that essentializes suffering and makes it too real. People forget that it is ultimately a very fluid and very bendable concept. You can change whether or not you are suffering by changing your perspective. Even depression, there is a reality to depression but it doesn't go beyond it being a chronic low-energy state. But you can adopt a perspective that you enjoy a low-energy state. You can even think of other people running around everywhere and think of how you are better in a relative sense (there's no such thing as better in an absolute sense) than they are, because you can appreciate this and don't need to be running around constantly entertained just to be happy and that you are independent from socially constructed "happiness" and instead are capable of defining what happiness is yourself.

    People should have learned at a young age - not everything works out as planned. Life is cruel & failure surely is a possibility . Propped up by liberal Gov't. agencies & the ridiculous 'everyone must make the team' attitude begins their can't fail mentality. When the bottom falls out & the 'nanny' Gov't. can't provide - the confusion & depression begins. I would like to see a breakdown on the areas , professions & social status & incomes of these suicide victims. Before & after BO's socialist agendas kicked in & destroyed more jobs.
