The Boy Scouts of America voted to allow openly gay scouts but keep in place a ban on gay adult leaders.
The century-old, faith-based group had previously refused to allow openly gay boys and adult volunteers.
The change in policy was endorsed Thursday by more than 60 percent of the organization's 1,400 voting members, the Washington Post reports.
Some criticized the new policy, which has been framed as a compromise.
"Young Boy Scouts! Come out of the closet! Be free! Until you turn 18. Then get back in there," tweeted Dana Liebelson a writer for the left-leaning Mother Jones Magazine.
