Read it an weep...it's business as usual in the Congress...smoke and mirrors, payoffs, and corruption. The Dog and Pony Show is over....for now.

@PoliticalSpice And dog and pony shows are what Barack Obama and Harry Reid do best. Boehner should be weeping. Maybe the politcal reality of selling us out is setting in.

@CaryNickel I'm a little upset at where our country is headed...more broke and in debt. Mostly pissed at RINO's and being sold out...the Liberal's are only doing what Liberal's always do.

This should have been done two weeks ago.

The only good thing that has come out of this is that the American people now have no doubt that the GOP will always put party ahead of country.

Hopefully the American people will remember that this is what happens when you let the republicans have any power. They will abuse it to the detriment of the country.

@dlm1984 This country has many problems. Spending is one of them. The vote to raise the debt ceiling had nothing to do with the spending problem. It had everything to do with the tea party republicans trying to use extortion to get their way because they couldn't win my an honest election.

@Real4WheelDrv Those are actually pretty good starts. We really should go over the military budget with a fine tooth comb and get rid of wasteful spending. We spend billions on things that the military doesn't want or need because it benefits big donors. We should eliminate the top tax level for social security tax. That would SOLVE any SS shortfalls indefinitely. The top tax rate should be raised to 91% for all income over $3Million per year and we should revamp the tax code to simplify it and get rid of loopholes. We should create a welfare fraud group to ferret out abuses in welfare programs. Abusers should be imprisoned. No more foreign aid unless we get quid pro quo. A total revamping of farm aid programs. No aid to large corporations. Period. Farm aid should be ONLY for family farms.

There are lots of ways to cut the budget. I'm all for finding them not denigrating the poor.

We need statesmen in the GOP to say we no longer want extremists in our party. They would suffer in the short run, but eventually would take the lead in American politics. They just aren't prepared to take the medicine necessary to cure their ills.

@alexpinca I was a loyal republican from age 18 until well into my 50s. The GOP I knew is no more, replaced by a bunch of thugs and bullies who are more concerned with hoarding guns and controlling uteri than they are about providing affordable health care to all.

@NormalFlora --- The rhetoric and tactics of the far right will/is their undoing. I believe over the next year or two, we will see a weakening right wing influence in our country.

@NormalFlora - Affordable health care is not a function of the federal government. Just read the Constitution if you don't believe me.

Why do they give a rats behind about the debt we will leave our grandchildren but don't care if there is a planet left to spend it on. If their little pea brains worked at all they would remember who ran up most of that price tag. I believe GW was handed a surplus but blew through that with the first and second wing ding he threw this country into. First one was valid second one they are still searching for the pea shooters. If all Corps paid their real taxes we wouldn't be having this chat.

    Disaster averted? what disaster
No one ever had any true intention of defaulting. It was all a political play, like it always is.
Nothing to see here folks, Move along.
The stock market seemed to be just fine, It was a total fake shut down.
and it seems most folks are tired of the theater

2014 mids is the time to replace these gutless vermin that have defaulted on what they were elected for. Say hello to the unemployment line boys and girls.
  • #39

The default rhetoric is/was/has bee ridiculous. The USA won't default UNLESS the President decided to not pay the debt...kind of like Jimmy Carter.

The IRS takes in 12 times the amount needed to pay the debt service alone. If we defaulted the President would have to decide that the bill on the debt would to get paid.
  • #158

Yeah, they could have still paid the debt...they just wouldn't be able to pay social security, MediCare payments, meat inspectors, FBI, etc. DOH!

I'm partially relieved that a deal has been reached, because it's tiresome having this sort of thing in the news all the time and everyone playing the blame game. However, I'm also disappointed that more good didn't come out of the deal, and that the game continues.

It seems apparent to me that we have a spending problem on both sides of the aisle. We shouldn't be spending as much on our military as the next 7 or 8? countries combined. We also need to start reforming welfare, social security, medicare and countless other programs to ensure that they're viable for years to come and actually benefit those who need a hand up, rather than becoming a lifestyle for generations of families and people.

Too late. The Democrats know giving people "free" stuff equals votes. They are quite willing to tax and spend to meet those goals. I have no idea why the GOP is in love with guns and planes, but they need to invest in education and domestic issues.

all the theatrics with a predictable outcome, print more funny money and borrow like hell to make up the shortfall each month for the interest payment alone

I've got a great business plan. I'm going to sell gizmos below cost and cheaper than they can even be made.

I figured I'd advertise like a mofo and make up for it in volume.

Champagne and caviar for several cronies on me..... well sorta you because it's your money I'll be passing out like candy and losing more than you can produce.

@CaryNickel how many of them give a damn enough about you and me enough to not accept the money they didn't earn? not as if they are worth what they are paid anyhow and of course they've made it known they want more money too boot.

Interesting but very narrow perspective....the debt must be addressed but maybe now we have a very disruptive influence out of the way. There are those who take a slashing and burn attitude toward the debt...perhaps we now have them out of the way and we can get down to real work.

@alexpinca The DEBT??? The conversation and issue is the deficit which is not even close to the same thing as the debt, nor the compounding debts tallied up prior to other bankruptcies.

Keep believing there is a way out as simple as handing over money.

Just look at Greece folks .... that's coming to America real soon!

JPMorganChase along with other banks are already taking measures to stop you from accessing your own money (cash control)!

You'll wake up one morning to find the government has helped itself to your bank account just like Greece!

Our government along with the banks are going to squeeze you like you won't believe!

Wake up before it's to late!

First they start with currency control so they can rob everyone blind ... no way to transfer your money out of this country out of their grasp!

Next comes the EBT shutoff (they've already tested this folks)... forced labor camps ...

Think your exempt just because you a liberal and voted for Obama ... keep thinking those happy thoughts while your in a labor or re-education camp!

"Disaster Averted" .... are you kidding me?

Going deeper into debt to the Federal Reserve, destroying the value of the currency, and raising the cost of living is what we done and you call that avoiding disaster?

    Please!

Just another round of kick the can and a sideshow to go with it!

All those parasites who weren't at work will get all their back pay as if the government was never shutdown to begin with!

Wake up people .... if this doesn't wake you up to the fact that we need to vote all these scumbags out of office ... nothing will!

This is no time for gloating...this is a time to assess what has happened to American politics. I don't blame the conservatives....that have strong held belief....what i question is their willingness to destroy the American economy to further their objectives. This is what they must answer for in the next election...not that they didn't have real concerns, but that they were ready to kill the baby rather than share custody.
  • #45

I'm not going to argue with you but what we wanted was to save everyone from obamacare even those that are too blind to see how bad it is. Then get spending under control. If we don't a day is coming soon that we can't just borrow more to cover what we owe. We cannot keep spending more than we take in.
How in the hell anyone can disagree with that I will never understand.
  • #58
    !
@alexpinca there never was any risk of default. One side or the other would have blinked by tomorrow. The GOP blinked first. But their motives were not to harm the country but to save it. Let the reality of the ACA sink in for a year or two and you may understand why they took this chance.
  • #65
    !
@FordPrefect ---- The GOP failed to perform the role of loyal opposition during the ACA negotiiation and design....as a result we have less than a perfect national healthcare plan....but the American voter is smart enought to come to the conclusion that the GOP was kicking sand into the whole project to prevent any plan.....now we must take the long road and fix as we go....THE LOYAL OPPOSITION FAILED AMERICA.

I am angry....I am angry that this man cost so many their livelihood confidence in their well being. I am furious with this right wing mentality that the solution to excessive debt is to drive the economy into a moutain wall. You want to increase the debt???? Kick the underpinnings of the generator of wealth out from under the American economy? THERE IS NO COMPETENT ECONOMIST AMONG THE TEA BAGGERS!!!

But you're fine with the Democratic solution to being in debt, which is to not to reduce spending, but to raise the debt ceiling. Try that with a credit card and see how that works out. Sure, there's relief that one can keep the stuff you really didn't need and buy more. But eventually that bill comes due. Are you fine with future generations footing the bill? I am not.
